I really don't like Settlers of Catan I'd use Ticket to Ride as a better gateway game.

Does Mahjong count as a board game?
If so, try Japanese Mahjong. There is much fun to be had in its complications.

Another good board game is Carcassonne: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcassonne_(board_game)
one interesting thing about it is that you build the map you play on, it slowly grows as you play along. There are also a whole bunch of expansion packs for it. Most of them add new map pieces.

D&D or Warhammer 40k are good.

Oh damn, I remember this one time playing D&D despite thinking of it as really sad at the time. Had so much fun. 10/10 would play again. If I had friends anyway.

Diplomacy!
But not with friends that get upset over in-game Backstabbing (needs at least 4 to 7 players).

I play D&D. But I prefer just following our own rules and doing unorthodox games. My favorite is to mix in serious gameplay with improvised slapstick comedy.

Arcadia Quest.

If you have someone to play with this is a great enjoyable game. You complete quest and the figures look amazing. Let me know if you checked it out

Tabletop Simulator from steam is $15, from there you can download modules for pretty much all the games suggested. It's not as good as playing it live, but will give you an idea of if you will like a game before you drop $40 on one.

I used to go to this "educational, but fun" summer school program where we'd play strategy board games while learning about military history. It was awesome.
The main game played at the class was Axis and Allies, a game that actually needed a whole week-long course to learn. It's a lot of fun to play, but finding enough time to play a 6+ hour game and people willing to spend that time is near-impossible.
