Anyone else reading Pastel, a story about a boy named Mugi who has a crush (and eventually confesses and dates) Yuu, the daughter of a family acquittance that is living with him?

The series was licensed and published but only went up to Volume 16 I think before being discontinued. Apparently it's up to 36 volumes now and still going. It's a very simple coming of age and love story but very drawn out.

The last volume I bought was 14. 36+ volumes for a romance is too long. It makes me cry when authors take stories and bloat them just to sell more volumes but alas that is life in the business world.

You're right it only went up to 14 and that was 4 years ago. I didn't realize it was that long. I pulled the hard copies out to read it again for nostalgia and just fly through the rest of the chapters online.

It's actually a really nice story with a great cast of characters but the development is just way too slow. Nothing is going on with anyone except for the dad and Mako, and Tetsu and Aoi. Then again even those couples hit a small speed bump in later chapters. Stuff needs to happen with the main cast, Mugi is too much of a nice guy. He needs some backbone. Yuu is cute and innocent but I'm sure she's waiting.

You may want to read I"s if you haven't yet. It's much shorter and complete. All in all I found it much more enjoyable. It's a bit more mature too.

Pastel and Suzuka and Ghost Hunt are the only manga series I have from Del Rey that are unfinished because of them closing shop. You have rekindled my anger from all those years ago. They are why I won't buy series anymore unless they are fully released.

Sadly, even the scanilation is incomplete on this one. The most recent chapter available is #132, which is about 7 volumes back from the most recent chapter of the manga released in Japan. It switched from weekly to monthly sometime in the first couple of years of its run, so the chapters got a bit longer then, but it is still a slow paced story. But that isn't all bad. It really does a good job of telling the tale and the side characters get plenty of development as well. I wish someone would pick up this and keep translating it, or better yet, Crunchyroll would pick it up and publish the chapters after volume 16. (It started in the same magazine as A Town Where You Live. Actually, it has a ton of plot points in common with A Town Where You Live, without the rage...)

It is a sweet, pure-love story with a lot of unrealistic aspects but a lot of great humor and tons of sweetness. If you can handle the fact that you won't be able to read the rest of it unless you can read Japanese, go for it!

If it was in romaji I may be able to pick it up but I don't know a lick of kanji. I think because of the slow pace of the story it was dropped by translators.

I really hope someday someone picks up and finishes Pastel (whenever it finishes), Suzuka (seriously, 3 volumes left and they ditched?) and Strawberry 100% (only had several to go also). I would pay bucks for a pay-to-print on-demand type of service to have these series finished. I'm sure there are ways to do it yourself but I want to support publishing business. That's one reason why I continue to go to brick-and-mortar book stores and buy magazines and manga there when I know I can get it cheaper online (with free shipping and price-match guarantee which means if the price lowers within 30 days I get a refund of the difference).

Anyways, I just re-finished volume 4 and onto volume 5. Even though the character designs are simple, I can't believe how cute the girls all. Yuu by far is my favorite followed by Tsukasa, Hana, Minami, Megumi and Hinako. Seriously, if I met a girl like Yuu I'd probably forget my name and who I was.

Dude, I love this series but the latest scanlations are so slow. While it's at ch. 150+, the latest scanlations are at ch. 132.

The scanlation group seems to have stalled. Hopefully it continues or someone else picks it up (ahem...Crunchyroll) or Kodansha continues the series in English. Seriously, Crunchy I will pay bookoo bucks for published volumes. Print me up some copies, I pay in cash. Even though the story takes so long to develop, it's still a darn good story. Just finished all the published volumes and I can't believe I forgot how just nice of a read it was.

This is the type of manga you read on a nice sunny, a few clouds in sky, maybe a little breezy, while you're sitting under the shade of a tree.

On a side note:

Do NOT read Volume 14, Chapters 77-80 on Valentine's Day (today). It will make you feel lonely and depressed while instilling in you a seed of heartwarming hope and happiness. Unless you have a girlfriend already...then you feel hope and happiness.

I gave up and started "reading" the raws. Their relationship actually gets much more progressive in the latter chapters.

I made a physical copy of Pastel volume 15 in English on a website called Blurb. You can buy it for 9 dollars but shipping may vary. I made it to the best of my ability in traditional Japanese style format. I'm making no profit, its just the book itself that cost money. I made it just to add to my personal collection . I'm making more physical volumes soon to come.
