I watched Brotherhood first and am now reading through the manga because it instantly became my joint favourite anime of all time (tied with Haruhi)

The manga's just as good and does feature a few extra tidbits here and there, mainly a few little things which weren't animated (although Brotherhood's basically got it all, so not you're not missing out on anything really) and the funny little 4-koma comics at the end of each volume. The main difference is that the first third of the story goes at a higher pace in Brotherhood, which you'll hear fans of the original series citing, but I watched that first so obviously it wasn't really apparent to me. The additional first episode of Brotherhood actually forms a better opening than the original imo.

To be honest, though, I think I prefer watching Brotherhood to reading the manga, maybe because the story seems to suit anime's dynamic format somewhat better than manga's static format. The action and special effects is pretty well done to perfection in the anime (with the possible exception of the blatant CGI on Envy's large form, although it comes down to preference whether or not this'll actually bother you) and the incredible voice acting does wonders for the already-brilliant characterisation (talking about original Japanese track here, though from what I've heard it's also got one of the best English dubs around).

if you really like the anime i would suggest the manga for sure. It is the source material, and though it stays pretty close, the anime does miss on a few things.

For example, there are more Royai moments in the manga lol but other than shipper stuff, anime never covers all that the manga does (HxH might be an exception). So it's not necessary, but i always suggest the manga.

btw i've never seen the anime haha. I read far more than I watch.

I finished the manga about 2 months ago, fantastic read from start to finish. I'm currently watching Brotherhood and it's absolutely fantastic. Just finished episode 21.

I've been wondering if I should check out the FMA manga too but with the comments here it looks like I'm not missing too much which is nice. I think I might just check out the manga anyway; Its been long enough since I've seen brotherhood that I don't remember the whole story offhand so reading it may be nice even if most of it made it to the anime.
