Rp'ing Anxiety?

I know this is absolutely silly of me, but I haven't truly been active in a RP thread in a couple years and when I find an interesting topic, I shy away from joining.

Almost like the fear of public speaking, I see how well these Rp'ers are and I am nervous my descriptions or characters aren't good enough.. :c
Mainly on sites like Gaiaonline, and Naruto Forums.

Does anyone else have this little anxiety or is it just me? xD

I don't let it bother me much, but then again, the only online RP I do is a Persona one, and we've been together a long time (though never finished a story, and we're on our third iteration).

Don't let it bother you. If they have fancier designs and such, so what? What's important is your character(s), not the design of their page. If you're new, just get into it for a bit - everyone's got a different style, and if they're jerks because of it, they're not worth your time anyway.

They're Role Playing, what are they gonna say? If they say you suck they just broke character. I mean we all gotta start somewhere.
Plus if they ever tell you that you suck, just give a big, "F*** you" and the finger

Well at least you got a total strangers support, Good Luck

Yes the fancier designs are a bit intimidating.. But yea.. I shouldn't let it bother me that much..

This made me laugh!
I didn't think about that.. They would break character

And Since CR has a story section, I'll try posting there to get my writing skills up in the meanwhile.

well yeah. not rp groups, just any groups/guild in general.

it's like going to a new school or new workplace, "idk anybody here, will they like me? how will i cope with the culture?" etc questions like these pop in my head all the time

Ok.. going to show my age badly here.
when I was in high school the net was mostly bulletin boards or chat rooms.
a bulletin board is basically the original version of a forum. (for those of you too young to remember them)
There were a couple of RP forum threads that I loved to go to.
the person who set it up only posted when things in the 'room' started to stagnate or to welcome new people. Others only added flavor by reacting to what was going on (as their characters) and still others pushed forward the action once someone brought in the antagonist or brought forth a problem that needed solved, or started said action etc.
I can't imagine things are much different than that if it's in a forum these days. Though a chat room set up would be a little more intimidating. You have less time to think about what you will say.
Personally if you don't think you're ready for a chat room setting, start a forum thread post. set up some rules. and see what happens.
The one I used to be involved with was set in a tavern where the barkeep was a fairy. You would be surprised at how much can happen in a bar. ahahaha. (keep those minds clean it was a pretty PG place)
It would be easy to set up a RP Thread here where most people have pretty good imaginations. Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide to do!
ha.. left out half a thought here lmao. my point is.. if you are too intimidated to go into an on going thread, you could always start your own, then post as you see fit. Sometimes it's easier to start things off than to jump in half way through.

As someone with an intense interest in D&D which would have more personal RPing as it is in person, unless one plays online, I too often was anxious about RPing. I made a rule for myself though which I'm sure can be used for thread RPing...

If someone is a jerk repeatedly, not that their character is slightly rude to your character but just outright blasts your RP instead of do the normal thing in most D&D circles and have a group laugh during those embarrassing moments + go with it, just get up from the table and go your own way.

Life is too short to accept drama like that when you just want to enjoy yourself. Good drama, in character drama, is great fun, but a joy of online RP is that you don't have to go through that awkward moment when you leave saying, "yeah, I don't want to play anymore. Have a nice night." You don't even have to owe your forum RP a reason for stopping - it should all be anonymous, yes?

Best of luck. RP is great fun with a nice group - I wish you to not have anxiety and have fun.

this is true, also.. if they blast you while in character all troll like, it's pretty easy to turn it into an awesome RP moment.

example:
(antagonist)
Marelion smirks Annalisa's way and raises his eyebrow in contempt. "Really Annalisa.. are you a child?" He snatches her drawings and glances at them. "These are pathetic and you are hopeless." He tosses the art into the trash. "Why are you even here?

(you)
Annalisa blinks a few times, shocked at Marelions outburst. Her eyes become watery as she watches him toss her hard work into the garbage. She takes a deep breath and grits her teeth for a moment before smiling sweetly at Marelion. "But you haven't looked at my best work yet!" she says brightly as she moves towards her desk. She opens her math folder and pulls out a lined sheet of paper. She holds it out so the entire class can see the badly depicted picture of Marelion drawn in crayons with horns and cartoon fire coming out of his mouth. Above the monstrous looking face, the words 'a** h***' are scrawled in pink puffy letters with stars and flowers all around them.

or something along those lines. lol. which will then get the whole room involved. which then leads to more interaction with the rest of the group.

I miss the days of BBS...back then my handle was "Necromancer". It always felt like we were part of a small secret society apart from the rest of the world. We would also meet up and make good friendships.....now we have to worry about the person we met online being some psycho-killer. "Mott the Hoople", where are you now?
