I don't let it bother me much, but then again, the only online RP I do is a Persona one, and we've been together a long time (though never finished a story, and we're on our third iteration).

Don't let it bother you. If they have fancier designs and such, so what? What's important is your character(s), not the design of their page. If you're new, just get into it for a bit - everyone's got a different style, and if they're jerks because of it, they're not worth your time anyway.

Yes the fancier designs are a bit intimidating.. But yea.. I shouldn't let it bother me that much..

Yeah, don't worry about the designs at all. That seems to be a big thing on Gaia (not so much on any other forums I think...) and is pretty, but doesn't really add anything to the actual RP. It's the content of your posts and your interest in writing/characters/story that matters.

Since you're talking about working on your writing skills, you're already more than qualified to join any open RPs! You're probably not as bad as you might think you are in the first place, and I think most RPers would be happy to help a new friend improve. It's a good way to experiment with writing and to learn.

I'm still good friends with some of the people I RPed with 5+ years ago. Good times.

nah (i definitely don't consider myself highly intelligent. maybe mildly intelligent?) you just have to have an imagination and don't take it too seriously.

I remember some live action role play I did back in the day (yeah I really AM that big of a geek :P) vampire stuffs. I was a malkavian (sort of the crazy versions of vampires) I went around with a stick that had feathers on the end of it and kept acting like i was fishing. finally someone asked what i was doing, I looked at them as if what i was doing was quite normal and said 'cat fishing.. yum!' I did all sorts of goofy stupid stuff like that.

I'm not saying you can't have a nice deep highly intellectual role play, just that it can be silly and light and fun too.

Just do what you think is right...all the advance stuff can come after. It's not a contest of who has the best picture to represent your character. I have a hate/love relationship with gaia. Crunchyroll has some awesome groups for Rping if you're interested

Side note....you know what would be cool? a RP skit that can potentially be a good story.

AzuresShade seems like an expert on this. To be honest, if you're too logical in your RP you will come off as stilted. Those moments can still induce good times with group laughter and that is one of the joys with it. Having fun with others and painting a story, if that is the goal of the RP, is what is important - not showing who has the superior mind. It usually isn't a competition.

I started to realize the anxiety the original poster may have though with that. Trust me, in person RP when you seem like you're doing something silly - most people will laugh and make jokes about it that aren't made to be mean. Behind a screen, one can't see the reaction of others during clumsy moments, but I imagine that most decent people would smile and go along. They would probably talk to you ooc and give tips as well (at least that was the experience I had in RP servers of WoW). It is either that or killing the story and most people, I believe, would try to keep things interesting.

I can understand I quit because of some harsh comments . Mine had more to do with poor writing than playing. I'm dyslexic so my spelling and sentence structure was lacking. Even when others defended me it was still hard to feel welcome so I end up quitting.

Hah, makes me remember six or so years ago when I started on some forums. Mhm, don't worry about it so much. Everybody has to start somewhere. Did you think more veteran roleplayers just started off good at it? Some people are naturally good, true, but generally those are people who have been writing a lot prior to joining. Just give it a try. We're friendlier than we look.

I go through it, too (and it doesn't help that I was diagnosed with anxiety, either).

I'll go through the process of creating my character, researching and trying to get everything together, then end up not doing anything. I'll post a couple times, maybe, but I just get really nervous about roleplaying with other people. I want to do it, but I just get worried that I'll mess up or that I won't be good enough. If I manage to force myself to get past the anxiety and continue for a while I can usually become comfortable, though.
