You know, I always notice, really high-profile standouts aside, there's a massive prejudice to the new in the yearly awards each year.

You mean shows from the back end of the year, i.e. Summer and Fall?

I've noticed this too, even just in my own voting. It's hard to counterbalance.

As always, thanks to pleth0ra for holding these awards and tallying up the results. It's always interesting to see how these things turn out. I see Attack on Titan cleaned up nicely which I kinda expected. There were a lot of great series last year that were worthy of being called Best of 2013. I'm just glad to see a lot of them represented in the numerous categories, even if they didn't win.

On another note, I do want to suggest for future annual awards that when you do them to not include series that started in the previous Fall season and ended in the Spring season of the next year. However, if you do want to include them then series that started in the Fall season of the year the awards are for that would be finished the next year in the Spring season should not be included. Personally, my voting was conflicted based on that. As much as I loved series like From the New World, Psycho Pass, The Pet Girl of Sakura Hall, etc. I didn't want them to take away from the series that actually started in 2013. That and I had already given those series plenty of votes for awards from 2012*. This is just my personal opinion.

Yeah that. Some exceptions for really big shows, but that was a general trend.

I figure that was what you meant. I noticed that, too, as I was tracking the votes as they were posted in the thread. People have short memories, I guess. To be fair, it is quite a ways from the Spring season to when we did the voting, though...

There's not really a good fix for it, except for people to pay attention to it on their own. I know my votes were slanted towards Summer and Fall, but that was mostly because I started watching simulcasts during the summer, ergo I had a good reason for it. xD

Great job to everyone that worked on compiling the list. I loved reading through the whole thing.

It would be nice to have more clear divisions between the sections. Perhaps use the header tag?

Also, SO glad to see Yowamushi Pedal even place in Sports. I was worried it wouldn't even place, because the show is seemingly rather niche here(there are so few people who post in its discussion thread).

Totally with you on that one. Sports anime; subclass: cycling. As niche as it comes. I'm a keen cyclist, so my interest was instantly peaked, but I imagine the subject matter probably isn't to many people's tastes. Still, those who don't check it out because of its being in the marginalised 'sports' genre are doing themselves a disservice. The writers really know how to crank the tension, without allowing the narrative to disappear up its own backside in a cloud of icky 'aim for the top' melodramatic cliches (although there is a little bit of that)! While there is room to expand on the characters somewhat (I guess more will be revealed about all of the protagonists as the show trundles on) there are plenty of gentle slice-of-life style observations layered on top of slapstick humour and some of the most beautifully dynamic and fluid action set pieces you've ever seen in animation. All this in what is essentially a story about Lycra-clad young men pedaling very quickly. It's genius. Cycling's never been so desirable. Wish I'd come up with the idea.

They always release potential Oscar contenders at the end of the year for the same reason.

Well its good to see Eccentric Family on here. That show was one of my favorites of the year. Its kind of sad that Blood Lad isn't any where on here

On the contents, they line up pretty well with what I expect. I still think CROWDS deserved a lot more attention than it got though.

Kind of what I expected, but not what I'd hoped for.

This is one that's on my list of things to go back and see. It'll probably be next after I finish The Eccentric Family.

CROWDS was something of a sleeper. Hopefully more people will give it a try after this.

Also, really happy that Hajime came in 2nd in Best Female Character (especially after all that bashing last summer).

But we also had shows like Shinsekai Yori and Pet Girl of Sakurasou which were the winner and runner-up for the 2012 awards! They started in fall of 2012 and finished in winter of 2013 so they qualified for 2013 here but I'm glad that both made enough of a lasting impression to win and place in some awards here. That is the mark of a good show to me. Will people remember the 2-cour shows from fall 2013 next year? Will Golden Time win romance again? Will Nagi no Asukara win best animation? Will Kill la Kill win best character designs again? I'm not sure, we'll see...
