I second Chihayafuru. Hanasaku Iroha, Soranowoto, Non Non Biyori, and Spice and Wolf are also highly recommended. Toradora is a great series, but it may be a bit much for your parents. The same goes for Chrome Shelled Regios, Kaze no Stigma, and Shuffle, among many many others. Good luck!

Just beware that a couple of these (School Days, Kiss x Sis) were troll suggestions.

While the latter isn't on CR, the former is.

Unless your parents are rather liberal, I would avoid anything with even a hint of fanservice or violence and play it ultra-safe for the first time. At worst they might find Usagi Drop boring, but being that they are parents, it will probably hit them right in the feels zone.

You could show them something like K-On!
It's sweet and has no perverted elements in it.
Hyouka is a pretty safe bet too. Minus the osen scene, but they might be able to look past that one part because it's about some kid's fantasy.

If they like romance there's Kimi ni Todoke.
Silver Spoon is a pretty "safe" anime as well.

Mushi-shi is a nice and peaceful anime without any violence or inappropriate stuff, but it can get a little disturbing at times.

Reborn is also a fairly clean and funny shounen/action anime.

And of course, I definitely would suggest

What do I show them that's family friendly? Parents are very serious about this and I don't know what anime to show them please help.

First off, I think it is awesome that your parents care enough about you to want to watch with you. Like seriously. Who know? Maybe you will bring them into the random haha!

My suggestions:

First Wave
Gingitsune <--This might actually be my first recommendation for an anime introduction. Clean, friendly, heart-warming and classy. Seriously, I don't think you could go wrong with Gingitsune.

Toradora! <--Best romance anime has to offer.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or Fullmetal Alchemist <--Imo, the best action anime for a newbie.
Silver Spoon <--A really quality anime all the way around.
Kyousougiga <--An amazing example of the artistry possible within the medium.
Tari Tari <--Clean & lighthearted.
Kill Me Baby <--Seinen slapstick random comedy happily free of pervy anime tropes.

Second Wave (Once they've acclimated to the medium, although who knows if they'll get that far.)
Sword Art Online
Angel Beats!
The Devil is a Part-Timer!
Gurren Lagann
Soul Eater
Working!!
The Eccentric Family

Trolling, but yeah, sports anime are good, too.

Therefore: SHOW THEM FREE!

Why not just watch some Ghibli movies? I feel like those would be perfect for almost anyone to watch.

Knowing what your parents normally watch would help too

Well already showed a few anime's to my mother and father, my mother was interested in usage drop, while my father was more interested in sword art online. with all these suggestions I think that they may even start to watch anime as well. though I think the fact you have to read puts them off a little they still like it and in the future I plan on showing them some movies like other people have suggested like summer wars or wolf children ( friends told me about wolf children)
