if a thread like this exists already then sorry

I got into anime because i needed something more than the spongebob or the barnyard animals. My parents are really strict about what i watch so i can't watch the big stuff. So one day i go to my cousins house and he is watching a anime where their are explosions and action and everything (Evengalion sorry if i spelled it wrong) and it was all animated and i say "what cartoon is this" He gives me the most dirtiest of looks and says " This is no cartoon this is anime" And so that's where i got hooked on anime, to my parents it was cartoons so i found a loop hole

In 1994 when I was 8 years old, the TV Network USA aired Dominion Tank Police 2 on TV. I was like, wow WTF is this. I ago addicted. Afterwards the Sci-fi channel started airing Anime movies every saturday morning at 10 A.M., I never missed it once. They showed everything from Ninja Scroll and 8-man to Tenchi Muyo. After they stopped, it was DBZ, Sailor Moon, and Tekkaman Blade in the early mornings. I have pretty much been exposed to blood, sex, and violence since I was a wee-lad because of anime. The only bad effect it has had on me though is that I would rather watch anime than do school work, or other tasks. I hasn't made me any more aggressive though, I am probably the calmest person I know. The good old days in the 90's when the censorship crusade was still in its infancy.

As to why I like Anime, well , because Anime is like a really good book, on TV. You always want to know what happens next and you can't help yourself.

If I'm really honest about it, at this point it's more of a habit than anything else. There's probably TV shows I'd enjoy as much or even more than anime, but I can't be bothered to look for them. The last TV show I tried to get into was Once Upon A Time and that just ended up sucking. Archer is still pretty great, but I wait for that to finish a season before I watch. 30 Rock was ok for a minute, but bleah it got boring and now it's gone. I tried to get into The Walking Dead, but that really didn't do anything for me either. I want to give Grimm a chance, but that might have to wait a bit. Eh I'm not making any sense...

tl;dr I'm lazy.

I love anime. It is entertaining and allows me to escape from this miserable and insufferable college life. It cheers me up, makes me smile, and is much healthier than drinking myself to sleep every night. I just really, really, really love anime. I just ordered a bunch of DVD's too, so I am pretty happy tonight.

Escapism really. I don't deal with normal people as myself, not even when I play online games...only when I watch anime do I actually seem to enjoy life to its fullest and I tend to forget the sorrows :).

That and shimapan...cause come on. stripes 4 life

My gateway drug to anime was science fiction. I didn't really start branching out that much from anime that didn't at least have a sci-fi element (which a lot does, thankfully) until near the end of the last century.

I primarily like anime because it basically allows an unlimited story palette on a limited budget. Stories that would require a huge SFX and/or set budget to do convincingly with live action are no sweat for an anime.

I also like that many anime have a planned end, and don't simply run until the ratings drop.

I also like that what starts as a comedy can turn serious, or even downright dark.

Life is pretty crappy so you might as well enjoy what you can. And I enjoy anime.

I watch because it's enjoyable, and a few episodes of the shows I enjoy can help me unwind after a rough day.

If we were just going by the opening post, I'd agree, but most folks are responding to the title, "Why do you watch anime" rather than "why did you start watching anime."

I currently watch anime because I enjoy it, and honestly, because Crunchy makes it so easy to select from so many things, pick a few to queue, and then watch whenever I want. While it's not the only place I watch, I probably would not watch it so regularly if it weren't so easy.

So, a big reason for me watching anime is simply because I'm too lazy to find other things to watch, and it's become a habit.
