I been getting into Path of Exile. It's a steam freebie. Kinda like Diablo 2. I don't hate it.

Some MMORPGs that I played that come to mind:
Ultima Online, WoW, Dark Age of Camelot, Entropy Online, Anarchy Online, Ragnarok Online, FlyFF, Aion, Ether Saga Online, Vindictus/Mabinogi Heroes, Rift, Tera, Dragon's Nest, Star Wars Galaxies (not to be confused with SWTOR), Silk Road, Spiral Knights, Dungeon Fighters Online, Guild wars 2 and a few others

Only two worth mentioning are Ultima Online and Ragnarok Online, god tier games r.i.p.
I played those two extensively, the others got boring after a short and brief period.

Diablo series usually isn't considered mmorpgs as they are instanced gameplay (Vindictus and C9 and others that followed suit are similar in that regard but have a consistent server as town/lobby for the rest), I'd group PoE in there as well with dungeon siege series and torchlight series as multiplayer rpg/hack and slash games or simply diablo clones.

Some of the games I mentioned are considered action hybrids which is why they are labeled "action-mmorpgs", mmorpgs where you don't have auto target or a lock on monsters. Tera, DN, GW2 all follow suit in that regard.

If you're looking for a good mmorpg that's both casual but rich in content check out elder scrolls online. As a fan of the series and a beta tester I'm def going to play that next.

Other games to keep an eye out for:
Everquest: Next (2015? Note: Landmark =/= the full game)
Star Citizen
WildStar (late Q2/Q3 2014)
Pathfinder
Blade&Soul (if they ever release it, nah who am I kidding)

On ESO:
Although it has many flaws imo, I think the game ultimately outshines many mmorpgs in lots of aspects, if you are like me an explorer and enjoyed GW2, but wanted more interesting bosses/dungeons/character progression, then I think ESO is for you. Also Alliance vs Alliance is fun.

ROSE is a good one with a decent fan base.

I loved the Secret World, but that game suffered due to its release date. It's still a fun game and has the best story line and quests of any MMO I've played. Right now I'm playing Aura Kingdom and ESO on the beta weekends. I'm really looking forward to Wildstar though and it looks like it will blow ESO out of the water if they pick the right release date. I'd say two months after ESO will be just about right as I think the majority of players there won't resub after the free month. Another guy mentioned Star Citizen which has great potential if the project continues on to completion.

Currently I play around on Dragon Nest, and a bit of Anarchy Online. Just biding my time until Camelot Unchained is released (est. December 2015).

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is interesting, beautiful world and graphics beyond its time (especially when you eliminate the fog generated by distance). Quite buggy though, even to this day, and the free 2 play aspect of it leaves you wanting with gear restrictions - some of the best quests/dungeons end with good gear that you will have only to admire without an unlock or paid sub. Very low, but friendly, population on official servers.

Lineage 2 was my main stay for years, past its prime now and the official game is very different from what I remember. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm just petty and jaded so I prefer the times between C1 and Hellbound. L2 was the root of so many of my gaming memories... good times!

PoE is extremely similar to Diablo 2. It is essentially what players were looking for in Diablo 3 (although I wouldn't discredit D3 at this point, attitudes towards D3 have improved since a recent patch if you want to check that out). If you like Diablo 2 there is no doubt you'll enjoy PoE, the real major difference between the two is that PoE has highly customizable builds you can create yourself and, due to this, is more complex than Diablo 2.

Yeah, PoE's skill system is reminiscent to a topographical map. I first didn't understand it, like, at all, so I went like 8 lvs without adding any points. -heh. And I think I should fire up D3 eventually, as I haven't played since last year. It's not that I don't like the game, it's just not what I expected after 12 years of waiting. Admittedly, I feel D2 is superior to it's successor in terms of 'fun' I have playing it. Which from time to time, I still do.

I know what you mean. I'm currently playing around with a build for my Witch (this is my first play through) and it's definitely a hit and miss type thing when you're experimenting but it definitely helps you see what works well and what doesn't as opposed to following builds others post - which is all well and good if people want to follow those strictly but I prefer the experience of experimenting myself. Ditto.

Nowadays.. I play C9 (Continent of the ninth seal) and its like dragon nest but with realistic art. And much more fun!
