So I just finished watching the anime movie adaptation of Bayonetta and I thought it was pretty good for a 90min film. Character designs and animation were pretty good and the soundtrack was very well done. However as I had never played the game before I wondered what the story was like compared to the game and whether it was faithful to it or not.

It also got me thinking of other game adaptations I'd seen like Persona 4, Devil Survivor 2 and Danganronpa and how they compared to the actual games. I know that Danganronpa wasn't well received by fans of the game (and I can see where they are coming from because the story felt rushed by the end of it) but I have no idea how fans of the other two thought of the adaptations compared to the games.

So what are your thoughts on game adaptations? Good idea or better to leave it alone?

Also if you know of any other Game-to-Anime adaptations let me know your thoughts on those too.

Side note: This does not include adaptations of Visual Novels.

Depends on how well done the series turns out.

I heard people didn't like Devil Survivor 2...

Anyway, the Pokemon anime...ugh. That's tough to watch.

I think an anime adaptation is always going to suffer, just because there's much less time.

Just like with Manga and LN adaptations, there are good ones, and then there are ones where ripping out my eyes and stabbing my ears sounds like such a better plan than watching it.

They couldn't really compare to the games, but I did really enjoy the Tales of Phantasia OVAs and the Tales of Symphonia OVAs.

The Symphonia ones, in particular, I thought did a pretty good job of bringing a bit more emotion into some of the moments that just were lacking pow (yes, that's a reference) in the game due to the graphical limitations. Seeing sprites go through those events isn't quite as powerful as seeing it animated.

The Phantasia ones actually had some potent moments, too, and the action sequences were awesome.

The worst, and I mean absolute worst game to anime adaption ever, was Togainu no Chi. The creators were like, 'we have to make it appeal to males too', but Togainu no Chi was originally a BL game, so taking out the BL means the original fans wouldn't care about the series? Literally, they took what made the game appealing and got rid of it. To top it off they made it shitty looking. The adaption couldn't even hold a candle to the visual novel's artwork, so they took away the BL and they took away nice art. The animation was shit too, and by the last few episodes you could tell they ran out of money to do it. They used weird scenes of like buildings, and reused scenes already animated, but they were so out of context?

It was so shitty, and I mean everything about it was shitty, and I'm so glad it flopped, but I'm still so mad they ruined such a good game like that. Dear lord. There is almost never dark BL made, and the one time you get it they butcher it beyond belief. It's a freaking insult to Nitro+Chiral, the company that made the game. They're stuff is very well received, yet they get their game turned into shit.

Seriously just look at this shit:

The Persona 4 adaptation was pretty good, though I think most game adaptations fall very short of the mark.

Higurashi no Naku koro ni and Type Moon's stuff (Fate/stay night etc) tended to be really good.

As far as more main stream stuff goes... Hit or miss I guess. I liked the old Fatal Fury anime movie things.
Tales of the Abyss was decent too. Persona 4 was fun. It wasn't as good as the game, but that whole franchise was just so silly it was fun.

That is terrible. That has got to be the worst animation I have seen. Even more so compared to the game. You can really tell they half-arsed that job and just didn't care about what it looked lie in the end.
