Yeah that's another one that I watched without playing the game. I enjoyed it but I could still tell it was a low budget job. And I noticed that they were trying to throw all the characters from the game into it somehow.

The thing is , in order to make Blazblue successfully into an anime you would have had to make it like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The game has a visual novel aspect that explains the story.

Basically every character you play has multiple endings, and none of them are a true ending either. Every time you go through any path of any character, it just gives you hints as to what is going on in the story. Basically the story was, that no matter what happens one thing is inevitable, that Ragna meets Nu-13, falls into the cauldron and the world gets rewound 100 years into the past by some machine. The exceptions being the beings who cannot be altered by the machine (Rachel, Hakumen, Hazama). After you play through ALL the stories, the True End path gets unlocked. The True End path is what they tried in the anime I think, but it's hard to appreciate it without knowing the back stories and motivations of all the characters.

So Honestly, Blazblue's story is too large to be successfully animated within a short time frame, It's a really fun fighting game and visual novel though, and It should have been left that way.

That brings up another point.

Say you take a game like say Kingdom Hearts and tried to turn that into an anime with all the stories that it has, you'd struggle to get all the details from the game into the short time span that anime have. You have the same problem with any kind of adaptation, be it movies or manga or games, you'll miss details that the original had.

For example my pet peeve with adaptations would have to be the Maken-Ki. The manga has a decent story line and, sure there's fanservice, but that doesn't degrade the story. The anime however put more emphasis on the fanservice rather than the story.

When it comes to adaptations you just kinda have to find a balance on what to emphasize, if you get what I mean.

As others have said so far, it depends on the people handling the project. Clannad (if visual novels are counted as "games") is an adaptation and was a masterpiece, but things like Danganronpa were just horrible. I think the main difference between those two is the fact that Clanand branched out and became its own thing than what Danganronpa did.

they can be hit or miss, just like any other adaptation.

I didn't like Devil Survivor 2.
Blazblue was just horrible.
heard good things about the "Tales of..." animes. never watched any of them, but I really should. I love the games to death.
Hyperdimension Neptunia was great, but mainly because they didn't stick to the stories of the games and just kinda went their own way.

I really liked Danganronpa, but then again I didn't play the game first because the game wasn't out at the time.

The original Pokemon run was good...or maybe I have rose colored nostalgia glasses?

Valkyria Chronicles was pretty good, surprised it hasn't been mentioned.

I like how the OP clarified that he didn't mean visual novels, and every other post seems to bring up a visual novel.

In any case, the only one I've seen past the first episode was Devil May Cry and it lost me fairly quickly.
