The meaning of the word gender

Does all this tagging come with boxes too?

I think it'll be easier to get everyone organized if we keep them in separate containers too.

The first possibility they suggest is that common brain regions may be involved in identifying gender-associated objects and identifying the gender of androgynous faces, so the effect is akin to what occurs in the red screen-white screen example above. Alternately, the researchers suggest that a higher cognitive function of 'adapting to gender' may modulate the process of 'assigning gender', whether to an object or an androgynous face.

"This study highlights how exposure to objects in our environment can affect our perception of gender in everyday life" says Javadi, lead author of the paper.

Your mental state is still very much irrelevant. Only facebook wants to come out on top, rule. Help you make those tribes and you will be a slave.

what has another person's perception of your face. got to do with your gender identity? please elaborate. So far the only things that appear irrelevant to me regarding the topic at hand are the study you referenced and your rant against facebook.

Then why not remove gender all together from face book? M and F are already tags with containers. But somehow the people trying to kick holes in their boxes are making it worse?

What I think about your statement. is that is is irrelevant to the discussion and I'm challenging you to support your assertions.

Not my words.
I just don't get what the obsession is with fitting into set categories.
Is it really that important to be separated in that sense?

It's important to the people who feel male or female YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE. doesn't describe them. If it's not important to you, what is the problem?

It's important to facebook I'm sure. Though I suspect It's less about being progressive and more about targeted ads. when I let face book know I'd traded in my jockey shorts for pantyhose they immediately stopped sending me adds for 40 something single girls and started instead showing me pictures of hot guys 'In your home city!'

This is what you wrote, is it not?

My heart goes out to those who feel their identity has been acknowledged by facebook.

Now, who's going to take action and what will happen for the love of cyber bullying, oh my heart bleeds.

are we even speaking the same language? If you can't stick the point what is the point of discussing anything? Cyberbullying is that what I'm doing? are you suddenly afraid I'm going to start typing in CAPS at you? how fearful.

All I'm asking is that you get to the point and defend your point via clarification, Logic and fact. So far you have demonstrated none of the above. rendering you irrelevant and soon to be ignored.

As papagolfwhiskey (PGF comes to mind as I type that given the NATO alphabet, does that mean anything? lol) said, it's important to those who feel it's important, which is seemingly a large portion of the world. My hypothesis is that this is mostly due to how people have been brought up to perceive things like gender and sexuality over the course of history given cultural bias.

Anyway, I believe it was actually possible before this change was instituted, and still is to go without a gender on facebook, the system would just refer to you with gender neutral pronouns and such.

A uniform resource locator to what you are speaking of can help users understand what Facebook has added in regard to gender identity, if others are not aware by now. Here is one source I have located so far on Facebook expanding their option of identification preference.

I agree that there should be thorough clarification for the term gender's meaning or any term, so that people will have a accurate understanding for the term. In regard to gender, I have read that the term is synonym to sex. Whether that is accurate or not to its true meaning, I am uncertain. I try to always research the origin of a word to develop more understanding of it, and from what I have read, gender is derived from the Latin word genus (meaning kind, sort, class and possibly family) and it also means grammatical purposes of nouns and pronouns (e.g. masculine, feminine and neuter; he, she and it). I see that more accurate versus the term being alike to sex or gender roles.

Why do you assume that there's a problem? That I have a problem with it or something... I'm just curious.

What I don't understand is why you seem to be so defensive of the need for them and why you seem to be on a crusade on this thread.

I simply find it interesting that the more people feel the need to be accepted and recognized by society, the more they keep finding ways to put up social barriers to separate everyone and highlight all our differences. At the end of the day, there are more people left out than accepted.
