There's plenty of anime that's disappointed watchers due to over-expectations and rave reviews, but have you ever just decided to watch an anime that didn't look too great but turned out to be amazing?

It's no award winner, but I didn't think I'd end up liking Nagi no Asukara. The art was pretty, and I had nothing to do, and I didn't want to marathon anything, and now it's the second largest reason why Thursday has become my favorite day of the week. I would have never before thought that I'd enjoy a show about preteens and their convoluted love polygon.

Haganai was definitely a surprise for me. I'm not usually a rom-com and harem person, but it was actually pretty enjoyable.

Sunday without god. It had a ridicously slow few episodes and almost put me into sleep, but it gets interesting later on.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I started Silver Spoon. But I surely wasn't expecting it to be as amazing as it is. Even though I started on season 2 on accident. Not only was it a good story, thus far, but I was able to start in season 2 and not be horribly lost. I later realized my mistake and watched season 1, causing me to like the series even more.

Romeo X Juliet. Every time I saw a picture or something of it I just thought "Ehhhh doesn't look too good." When I actually watched it, though, I was surprised by the atmosphere they had going. Plus I absolutely adored the dub - both the voice actors and script. Its probably one of my favorites. Juliet, Montague, and Ophelia's voices in particular blew me away.

AKB0048 as well. From what i'd seen of it, I didn't think the CG and character voices would work. Plus I thought the whole "space idol" thing was kind of a lame idea. Boy was I wrong. This became my second favorite idol series after Idolmaster. Actually, Idolmaster was surprisingly good as well, but I won't go into that.

EDIT - I also agree with the individual below me, just for the record.

Golden Time. I'm not sure what I was expecting, (perhaps for it to be unrealistic) but I really like it. It's a believable and relate-able story that brings on those feels I don't have.

Sunday Without God is definitely the biggest one on my list, although I thought it got weaker after the first half.

For me it was Polar Bear Cafe. It turned out to be a simple but very enjoyable slice of life/comedy/whatever show. It's about the "troubles" of a lazy panda, the relationship of a penguin and his "lover", and the wise yet aloof polar bear owner of the cafe. Very relaxing and non stressful show. The simplicity helps me relax from the complexity of life. Gets me rolling too, pretty funny stuff.

Im not sure if I thought it looked bad or not, but an Anime called Space Dandy has really caught my interest. It is just so...amazing, it recaptures that feeling I had of waking up to watch Saturday morning cartoons. Im laughing at jokes, grinning stupidly and munching on cereal the entire time.
Second would be Lucky Star, I was going into that anime prepared for the worst and absolutely loved it.

And Yet the Town Moves, /Kobato, /GA-Geijutsuka-Art-Design-Class, and /Humanity-Has-Declined were surprisingly good.

And Yet the Town Moves' plot involves a girl working at a "maid cafe." But, outside of the fact that the old lady that owns a tea cafe is simply trying out new things, the "maid" part is hardly stressed at all. Being a SHAFT anime, I was expecting a bunch of cringe-worthy "fan service," but there was none to be found (the anime even trolls its viewers by suddenly showing really low camera angles just to have characters stop just out of range of a perv shot. It's kind of funny.) I love SHAFT's experimental anime style, so this one thrilled me.

Kobato. I wasn't expecting much from the anime, and it sounded like a typical Magical Girl/Collect-a-thon anime (like Inuyasha). But, it turned out to only be 24 episodes, and I really enjoyed all of the side stories and romance.

GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class. Having watched Hidamari Sketch and Sketchbook: Full Color's, I expected Geijutsuka Art Design Class to be a rather slow-paced and light-hearted art show. When I finally watched GA, I got an art anime that was fast-paced, rather fun, and full of art terms and projects. I seriously wanted more after I finished.

Humanity Has Declined. The description of the show made me think it was yet another serious fantasy-style apocalypse anime. Instead, I got a rather beautiful art design and a lot of comedy in a rather unique anime world. The animation its-self is rather neat, and I enjoyed every bit of it. It also has a rather large number of well thought out topics and emotional situations that really added substance to the show.

Chihayafuru

I'm not sure why I even decided to watch this series since I typically gravitate to action oriented shows (usually with ninjas lol). Long story short (and for lack of a better description) I just got hooked on the show. I'm by no means about to play karuta, but I certainly have some appreciation for it now thanks to Chihayafuru.

I'm hoping for another season (and soon).
