Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still

If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you remember the movie that they often showed based on Jonny Sokko and his Giant Robot. When I saw the cover of Giant Robo, I thought it was cool that they did an animation about him. Then I watched it, and my jaw dropped.

It's insane, in a good way. Never a slow moment, with some of the most breathtaking fight scenes in a mecha anime ever. Everyone is badass, even the villains. And there are twists after twists. You expect the good guys to be the most powerful, and then Alberto the Shockwave literally TEARS through the good guys base forcing them to flee. And it's all dosed with lots of retro cool.

Sora no Woto

A lot of people thought this was like K-on, but it's an awesome little slice of life anime that deals with forgiveness and purpose in a world that is slowly dying. LOTS of feels, and Amazing Grace will make you cry. Deeper than you think.

Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren't They?

Do you like Witchcraft Works? Try this one. It's a lot better than you'd think, with a positive, up-beat spirit to it. You also have to love how the three chosen heroes willingly embrace their destiny and the fun relationship they have with their rabbit girl guide and protector.

There's plenty of anime that's disappointed watchers due to over-expectations and rave reviews, but have you ever just decided to watch an anime that didn't look too great but turned out to be amazing?

It's no award winner, but I didn't think I'd end up liking Nagi no Asukara. The art was pretty, and I had nothing to do, and I didn't want to marathon anything, and now it's the second largest reason why Thursday has become my favorite day of the week. I would have never before thought that I'd enjoy a show about preteens and their convoluted love polygon.

It's a running joke amongst some anime fans that quality of a show is dependent on how poor it is received in Japan. The lower the numbers the better the stories :P

Ones that come to mind:
Allison & Lillia - Sales so low they were not reported.
Koi Kaze - 800 copy average
Golden Time - 928
Dance in the Vampire Bund 1,207
Upotte!! - 1,269
Ghost Hunt - 1,556

/my-teen-romantic-comedy-snafu I really wasn't expecting this to be any more than the title, but the protag was surprisingly strong willed and never backed down from his (admittedly odd) principles. Good mix of comedy and seriousness.

/love-lab Going in, this seemed like it would just be a moe fluff piece, but it turned out satirically funny at times.

/tantei-opera-milky-holmes This show is really childish and stupid. Or that's what you think until after several episodes in, suddenly start repeatedly thinking: "what was that noise?" only to realize it was your own laughter.

There's a pretty long list of anime that fit the mold. These are shows that I didn't exactly have high expectations for, but ended up being highly enjoyable shows. Here is a short list of such titles:

Arpeggio of Blue Steel - Looked like one of those gimmicky moe traps, but the story is just great.
Outbreak Company - Seemed to be candy for the otaku, but the show ends up being much more than that.
Chronicles of the Going Home Club - It's stupid, but it's hilariously stupid. It's a show that makes fun of itself, and it had me laughing.
Date A Live - Another harem, right? Well, this one brought something new to the table, and it makes for an entertaining watch.
Pet Girl of Sakurasou - Looked like it was going to be a trashy romcom, but it ended up being a well-developed show about community.
Girls und Panzer - See Arpeggio of Blue Steel. Pretty much, the same thoughts.
Mashiroiro Symphony - Pretty heartwarming story for an H-game adaptation.

Noucome (My Mental Choices...). Looked like your usual below average harem, but ended up being funny as hell and really enjoyable.

The World God Only Knows. Passed over it after reading the description thinking it was another stupid harem anime with a loser main character. I can't remember why I actually started watching it, but it really sucked me in. Keima turned out to be awesome, there was no real harem (until goddesses anyway), and the way they subtly showed how much each conquest tormented and changed him was really well done.

Kingdom (2012) - A Manga and Anime series set in the Warring States period of Japan. It's classic Shounen with a poor kid and king kid aiming to become the greatest Ruler and General OF ALL CHINA! The story is Generic, and the Animation is horrible horrible CGI. But after a the first 10 episodes, you start to get really attached to the characters. It also moves at a fast pace and really gets things done. Our kid being a rather likable character real fast. Unlike Naurto, Xin has a very charismatic feel to him, which is why he aims to be "The Greatest General under Heaven" The Manga is essentially PG-17 Berserk(Berserk is totally 21+ Manga style) which it's own set of likable characters. I honestly didn't think I'd like it so much. The quality between Season 1 and Season 2 has a HUGE Jump, and despite the horrible name, I think people should really get into watching it. It's still airing!
Spoiler Pictures below

Rec - short Shaft-animated Anime running at 11 nine-minute episodes. It's your essential Seinen Romance complete with all that relationship crazy you'd expect. IT HAS A PROPER ENDING TOO, IT'S LITERALLY AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME, GO WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE OR SOMETHING.

3. Uchōten Kazoku
4. Aku no Hana (Because of all the hatred surrounding it)

My Mental Choices... One of the funniest comedies I've watched in awhile.

The [email protected], IMO the best of the idol anime. The last 2 or 3 story arcs are tear jerkers as well.

Gintama.

I kid you not because I thought it was beyond stupid and confusing. It is stupid but it's one of those "so stupid that it's laughable and entertaining" type shows.
