Kokoro Connect is my surprise anime, I added it to my queue by accident and always scrolled past it whilst looking for other shows. One day I just clicked on it out of boredom and ended up watching all 17 episodes last weekend.

Even though the animation is nothing special, the story idea is certainly unique and all of the characters come across as real people with likeable and unlikeable traits. Besides the phenomenons that occur, this is one of the most realistic animes I've ever seen and everything that happens seems totally plausible.

I find that whilst watching Kokoro Connect it's easy to develop a 'favourite' character and a 'most relatable' character. My personal favourite character was Aoki just by virtue of how carefree and goofy he is, but I can definitely relate most to Iori the most as we share similar problems.

10/10 for Story, 9/10 for characters, 7/10 for soundtrack (the 3rd ED is really great) and 6/10 for animation. One to watch for sure.

I avoided Hunter x Hunter for the longest time thinking it would be a bland cookie cutter shōnen not worth investing the time to get caught up on.

I was wrong.

Oh so so so many I could list... like 95% of all romcoms come to mind... I expect a boring show but come out loving them, all of them... Oh and Harem shows, reading the synopsis or knowing it will be a Harem makes me think it will be bad, but for me they generally never are. Anyway the ones I will list:

Gintama:

I am not a huge fan of long series (over like 50+ episodes) and this one goes nearly 5x as long as I can generally stand a show going for. Also I am not a fan of nearly pure comedy pieces, which is what I was lead to believe Gintama was. So I kept passing it up for other shows.

Finally I got around to watching it and damn was I sure surprised about it, not only was it an amazing comedy that did jokes over games I have played and other shows I have watched, but it also mixed in some great action scenes/arcs, amazing stories, and even some romance/feels here and there, though that was limited.

Ended up before I knew it watching close to 200 episodes and went all the way to finish the series.

Overall an amazing series that I was not expecting.

Fairy Tail:

So looking at this, seeing some small 1-2 min clips, and judging from the synopsis I read of it. I expected it to be a crappy imitation of the big shonen shows like DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, etc that too me were already crappy. Saw the first two or three episodes in English and could not stop laughing at their voices, they sounded completely horrible to me, but of course I dislike dubs, so I said to myself, OK why not I will go find the Japanese subs and see if I like it that way.

Found it with subs, and I don't know why... I hate Naruto, I hate One Piece, I hate long running shows (over 50 episodes), and generally I hate the whole "Friendship makes me stronger!!" trope. This is what Fairy Tail pretty much is, but I absolutely loved it for some reason. It had the right amount of comedy, action, and details to pull me in and keep me.

The arcs are fairly well balanced, there wasn't much if any filler really, and I thoroughly liked all the characters, good and bad.

Another overall good show, though I know some would probably hate it.

I didn't think I would like Fairy Tail either but I love it now. It isn't the highest quality show or the best written but the characters are wonderful as is the sense of family the guild has. The music also fits it perfectly which is essential for any great anime. Really looking forward to the re-boot!

It's a running joke amongst some anime fans that quality of a show is dependent on how poor it is received in Japan. The lower the numbers the better the stories :P

Ones that come to mind:
Allison & Lillia - Sales so low they were not reported.
Ghost Hunt - 1,556

Allison & Lillia was surprisingly good. It was about as different in theme as Spice & Wolf is compared to most anime. It's got a classic feel to it, and the way the storyline progresses from being dedicated to Allison & Wil to being dedicated to Allison's daughter (Lillia) added quite a lot to the story. Nowadays, It's rather unusual for stories to have their own legacies.

When you mention Japanese sales numbers, /My-Ordinary-Life comes to mind. Being one of my absolute favorites to come from Kyoto Animation, it's disappointing that Tamako Market, Hyouka, and Chunibyo (bloody Waponese title) absolutely crushed it in terms of sales numbers.
If I remember correctly, the DVD sales remained steadily under the 1,000 for each volume's debut week. As such, My Ordinary Life will never see the light of day ever again.

Guilty Crown

I had this on my watch list for a while and decided to give it a shot and I'm glad I did! I wasn't expecting it to be very good, but it ended up being EXTREMELY FRICKIN AWESOME. I usually hate animes that involve mechs, but Guilty Crown ended up being one of my all time favorite animes.

Anime that I didn't expect I'd enjoy right now are D-Frag and Nobunaga the Fool

Seconding that! I loved Nichijou's style of humor, and it gave me a whole new perspective on Kyoani and roped me into liking a studio that I previously ignored because all they did were moeblob shows.
Actually, apart from sales, I find that the farther a series' art style is from the popularly accepted norm, the more willing I am to watch it. If you're not relying on a cute character art style, that usually means you bring something else unique to the table.

Hunter x Hunter 2011 - 9.5/10
Adventure Comedy
Awesome series. Reminds me of original Dragonball a lot. Awesome characters, loved the first arc and some really memorable episodes. I love the sondtrack and characters especually Killua & Pitou

Space Brothers - 8.5/10
Comedy Slice of Life
Was pleasantly surprised by this series, it has great characters who're relatable and a great plot and a nice soundtrack to match.

Log Horizon - 7.5/10
Adventure Comedy
Similar to SAO but a little more serious at times and not so much romance. Nice series, good humour.

Kotoura-san - 6/10
Romantic Comedy
Amazing first episode imo, slows down afterwards but it's funny and worth a watch]

Kingdom (2012) - A Manga and Anime series set in the Warring States period of Japan. It's classic Shounen with a poor kid and king kid aiming to become the greatest Ruler and General OF ALL CHINA! The story is Generic, and the Animation is horrible horrible CGI. But after a the first 10 episodes, you start to get really attached to the characters. It also moves at a fast pace and really gets things done. Our kid being a rather likable character real fast. Unlike Naurto, Xin has a very charismatic feel to him, which is why he aims to be "The Greatest General under Heaven" The Manga is essentially PG-17 Berserk(Berserk is totally 21+ Manga style) which it's own set of likable characters. I honestly didn't think I'd like it so much. The quality between Season 1 and Season 2 has a HUGE Jump, and despite the horrible name, I think people should really get into watching it. It's still airing!
Spoiler Pictures below

Rec - short Shaft-animated Anime running at 11 nine-minute episodes. It's your essential Seinen Romance complete with all that relationship crazy you'd expect. IT HAS A PROPER ENDING TOO, IT'S LITERALLY AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME, GO WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE OR SOMETHING.

Finally, another person who loves REC. It's an awesome anime/manga, just wish they'd continue the anime and the manga have more chapters regularly.

Have to look up kingdom.

There's so many to list here, inuyasha. I heard about it, wasn't to sure in 1st few eps but loved every sec of the story, cried when i learnt ianime ended before the manga, then was overjoyed same day to find final act continued it!!!

Ouran, came across ep 1 randomly on youtube. 1st half i thought is this really the story. By 2nd half i was LOL!!! showed it to my bro, same reaction except he almost turned it off.

Haruhi suzumiya. Still ashamed to admit i nearly gave this one up. I found it by choice from several fellow anime fans. Watched 1st 3 eps, not ep 0, and found it really slow & nothing like i was told. Thus i said if ep 4 doesn't win me that i drop the series. What an ep, 1 line changed the very nature of the show. It went on to be one of my top 5 anime and even my fav anime movie so far. I really hope they'll continue the story for anime, there's so much manga left & then the novels even continue from where the manga is ending.

fma. I know what you're thinking, who could anyone have a low opinion of this. I didn't know what the series would be about so the 1st few eps scared me. Wasn't expecting horror but i was wowed by the radically different story and the detail. It was what inspired me to read the manga but i still enjoyed the tangent story of anime 1. Yet to hear about brotherhood was a dream come true. Loved every second of it!! Really grateful that anime central had it in the short time they aired in the uk. It opend my eyes to so much anime.

From the new world. Again ashamed to have given up on this one. Started watching it here on cr, but after i think ep 4/5 i decided to drop it. It just seemed to hard to grasp, which is due to it being heavily influenced by japanese history & myths which i know very little about. After watching a few other shows, I decided to rewatch the series from beginning to end. Sadly it's a series that works better when there's a few eps in a single run over 1 ep a week.. Such is the nature of some shows, they are that awesome that waiting a week for the next ep actually loose interest, in hope of watching it in a single run like dvd/bluray.

There's plenty, and not just anime. It's from my exp of coming back to shows that keeps me open minded about them and on the hunt for new shows all the time. Both older and upcoming!

Be warned, not only are the Mecha in Guilty Crown useless, they show up probably thrice throughout the series. They work similar to Matrix-machins too, how you hook yourself up from afar to pilot them...or something.

Look, every single character in Guilty Crown is based off a different show's character. They chould've called it Borrowed Crown, the only thing it lacks is originality.

Of course, if you ever wanted to see Asuka fight Char, Guilty Crown has that. Of course, you're going to get cut-away scenes of Shinji-clone crying during all that.
