Two come to mind. One being Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru. I thought it was going to be just like every other RomCom but instead it had one of the best male leads I've ever seen in an Anime, plus it had an original take on viewing friendships and "nice girls".

Second is ef: a tale of memories, once again it was different from the regular drama/romance animes and it had one of the most beautiful style to an anime as well.

Mayo Chiki
Girls und Panzer
Kokoro Connect

None of them were really amazing but they were all much better than I expected and they are all worth a watch in my opinion ^.^

Just for the past couple of seasons:

Definitely Arpeggio of Blue Steel like mentioned above. The moment I saw it was all CG, I was at first turned off but I gave it a chance and my god am I glad I gave it a chance, it was good.

Super Sonico and Wake Up Girls! are also surprisingly good so far.

Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World)

I was skeptical about this one at first because I was sure I was going to end up dropping it but I was desperately looking for something good to watch during the Fall 2012 and Winter 2013 seasons. After I read the plot I was somewhat intrigued. Although it started off slow I always felt that there was more to come. I was one of those people who didn't drop it after the few yaoi and fanservice scenes earlier on in the series and now it is currently one of my top five anime because of its amazing ending. This anime is a prime example of it doesn't matter how you start but how you FINISH!!!

Dance in the vampire bund was a huge surprise, since I was reading how it's basically under-age fanservice but to my delight it wasn't AND had a very nice story.

Another surprise would have to be the more recent Kill la Kill, for obvious reasons, but it has become one of the best animes to come out in a long time.

The idolmaster was the hugest surprise. Seems to be this huge mix of opinions on this show.

Since I haven't seen any idol type anime, I decided to give this a shot. In the end, it was probably the biggest surprise because it was amazing in my opinion. In fact, it is on my top favorites.

I was surprised by the depth of Free! Iwatobi Swim Club. Based on the trailer, I expected it to be rather shallow, but Rin's backstory was touching. I also enjoyed the Rei-Rin "competition".

Zegapain is a series I rarely ever hear anything about, but it was just a really enjoyable series to watch. Super underrated in my opinion.

Pet Girl of Sakurasou - Thought it was just gonna be a generic harem anime, but I tried it because I liked the art. I ended up loving it waaaaay more than I thought I would. One of those shows that left me feeling empty after it was over.

Love Live! - I don't like idol shows. Never have. But for some reason, I liked this one. It was cute, and simple, and not overly pretentious. Watching it just made me smile.

Space Brothers - I had no idea what to expect from Space Bros. I wasn't even going to watch it at first - the premise just sounded rather... Not quite boring, but maybe... Pedestrian. I like weird, out-there shows, or something unique. This is definitely a unique show and I'm glad I decided to watch it. It's one of my favorites now.

Upotte! - I started watching this for laughs, quite honestly. Just to see how absurd this premise could really be. I did not expect to like it. I expected to be offended by it, if anything. But I really liked it. It wasn't nearly as perverted as I thought it would be (especially after the first couple episodes) and I genuinely liked all the weaponry information, even though I'm not a gun enthusiast at all. The only thing I didn't like, actually, was that it ended so abruptly. I wish they would have made a proper show of it so the story could be fleshed out more.

A lot of my animes are ones I wasn't sure if I would like but ended up getting into,

Bleach, I just thought looked strange but ended up enjoying it,
The pilots love song, more recent anime that I watched for fun of it but man I'm always on edge of my seat, and looking at time going, it hasn't been 30 minutes yet when it ends
Free! I originally watched this because I was thinking of trying some sports animes for fun, and really enjoyed this more then thought I would.

Almost every harem and RomCom I've seen has been really good for different reasons, and I chose to watch all of them out of boredom.
*scrolling through titles* "This has a cool name/seemingly silly plot, I'll watch it."

Many a time I stayed up until 3 in the morning on a school night finishing up the season for them.

Another one that's actually going on now that I absolutely love after the latest episode: Hamatora. The plot sounds weird, but the show is executed amazingly. Give it a shot if you haven't, it's on CR.

Hmm, probably AllisonxLillia cause I'd never heard of it and when I read the brief I wasn't jumping at the chance but yeah pretty good anime. Also can't remember the Japanese name but dog scissors was one that was slow to start but got better over time.

Attack on Titan
The hype nearly killed this one for me. I had literally no intention of ever watching it (overhyped shows usually end in disappointment for me tbh) However, after I gave it a try, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. It's very entertaining and has an interesting story and I can't stop watching.

Hanasaku Iroha

I was just starting to get in to anime and had finished Toradora for the first time a few days prior. I didn't think that anything could top it, but I watched Hanasaku Iroha because I had a Crunchyroll month-long trial. I didn't necessarily think that it would be bad, I just thought it would be average. It totally blew me away. Right now it is one of the five anime on my anime list who have a 10/10. Since watching that I've become a huge fan of PA Works, though I don't think they're without their faults (I'm looking at you "Another.")
