Okay so I contacted Verizon and it's not on their side of things that people are having connection issues.

Here is some proof:

First I will show you the "tracert" of www.crunchyroll.com, www.netflix.com, www.facebook.com, www.verizon.com

Did you notice the time it took to connect with Crunchyroll?
Now I will show a "ping" test of: www.crunchyroll.com, www.facebook.com, www.netflix.com (out of 100 packets)

CRUNCHYROLL.COM

NETFLIX.COM

FACEBOOK.COM

Alright. So it takes almost 10x as long for one packet of data to connect to www.crunchyroll.com then it does to www.facebook.com. Granted, Facebook is a multiBillion dollar company with server factories. But still 10x as long. that's a lot longer. That's like seeing who can run the farthest distance the fastest. Facebook can run 10 miles by the time Crunchyroll can run 1 mile.

To me, this seems like a Crunchyroll issue and not an ISP issue.

If you could post similar tests that you ran to confirm or to deny my hypothesis, please feel free to post. I'm sure the systems admin of CR would greatly appreciate more feedback.

CR doesn't stream the vids directly from their web server, they use CDNs... Try your tests again using cp150757.edgefcs.net instead...

Okay, but people aren't just having issues with streaming. They are having issues of just connecting to the website.

Not sure how to copy out of the command prompt, but when I pinged cp150757.edgefcs.net I didn't lose any packets and had an average time of 20ms. I did facebook as well and had an average time of 60ms and didn't lose any packets. Cruncyroll had an average of 46ms. Netflix had an average of 39ms, but I don't know if they use a CDN and I've heard that Comcast and Netflix have been at odds of late (too lazy to dredge up the news article). Admittedly, I only had it send the default of four packets...

you need a larger pool then 4 packets XD

type:

ping www.crunchyroll.com -n 100

But if those were your times then it seems like CR has a problem with Verizon and not the other way around. B/c in the tracert as you can see the packets leave the Verizon servers really fast, but then they hit CR servers and they slow way down.

although, to be frank. I haven't noticed anything wrong with CR today. The site seems to be loading fairly fast. I haven't streamed anything yet. I use my IPOD for that. so we'll see

This time sending 100 packets.

cp150757.edgefcs.net: 20ms(min) 39ms(max) 21ms(average) lost 2 packets
crunchyroll.com: 48ms 85ms 57ms lost 8 packets
Netflix.com: 39ms 59ms 42ms lost 19packets
Facebook.com: 60ms 79ms 61ms lost 1 packet

I have been having playback issues as of late - I don't even know how many times I had to refresh in order to be able to watch all of the newest episodes of Log Horizon these past couple of weeks. I've been trying to decide whether it's Comcast or the other sites that are to blame for this.

http://www.speedtest.net/ for reference - I've seen my internet get faster than this, it's rather inconsistent for me:

I'm on my desktop, Win 7, since I got on to watch a new episode of Log Horizon which isn't available for viewing in the CR app just yet. Hopefully you have better luck streaming than I did.

Using TWC, and previously AT&T, I've never had an issue connecting to or using the website in the 2+ years I've been a member, and I'm on here all the time. If that's the issue here, for the comparatively miniscule amount of web traffic compared to streaming content, then it seem to me at least that part isn't CR's fault; it's either the fault of the ISP or even possibly (but unlikely) some problem hop in the backbone route the packets are going. I'm not so sure CR can do too much about that. Seems to me that we're already seeing net neutrality issues with some ISPs and they just aren't disclosing it.

I'm really not looking forward to the Comcast takeover of TWC. Less competition is really a bad thing for consumers. If the people having the problems have a choice of ISPs, then the threat of losing customers would force the providers to provide better, more open service. But if there is only one game in town, then they can do pretty much whatever they want, not just with you, but also with the content providers as well.

It's not the ISP's fault. I already asked them, and they say they have nothing to do with it.
I think it's probably just the servers that CR hosts on. And they are having the issue with the ISP to host CR. I'm not sure b/c I don't know how it all works.

Hopefully CR will disclose a lot of information pertaining to the issues that people are experiencing. It's getting rather cumbersome.

Very possible that this is a ISP specific issue:

As a Verizon FIOS customer, I see poor performance during peak hours (7p.m. to Midnight)... this caues the website to load very slowly/time out, and also impacts the iOS/PS3/PS4 applications when they try to login/retrieve data about available streams. HOWEVER...once a stream is actually launched (sometimes takes multiple tries), video playback is fine.

Looking at my router/firewall logs into where network traffic is going has shed some light on the potential issue (at least in my situation).

Website/application traffic not related to actual streaming video is being routed through Cogent's network. Actual stream content is routed to a local CDN.

Of course, it just so happens that Verizon and Cogent are not "cooperating" very well: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/02/netflix-packets-being-dropped-every-day-because-verizon-wants-more-money/

It is completely the fault of Verizon. I have two residences and pay for Internet at both. I spent last week in PA residence streaming nonstop with my 10 Mbps cable internet via Blue Ridge, without a single buffer or wait time. The latter part of this week, I been at my NY residence and have an 80 Mbps FiOS package. Crunchyroll is taking forever on the exact same AppleTV and PS3 to even load up the show listings, and when they finally load (if they load without an unable to connect error), then it is several minutes until a show loads and plays with several pauses to buffer throughout an episode. Hulu loads fine, however it seems that even on my laptop the is massive slowdowns with CR. With the exact same equipment on a different provider, it runs perfectly in 1080p.
