I am a subscriber and use my PS4 as the primary application for accessing Crunchyroll. While it usually works well enough, I am consistently unable to watch newly released episodes without an annoying delay.

For up to 30 minutes, attempting to watch a new episode (of anything) results in:


Unable to access online features.


Anything previously released works.

Between 30 minutes to 1 hour after release, the video and sound quality is horrible to the point of being unwatchable. I don't mean 480p, I mean recorded-in-an-underwater-train-station-bathroom bad.

After an hour, the video works normally.

I experienced this just now with Zvezda Plot episode 7.

They encode different video for different platforms. PC compatible video is what comes at launch time and everything else comes later. Low res for PS4 is encoded faster/earlier than high res which is why you notice it being available first and then the other stuff follows with an hour.

I don't think low res is an apt description. It doesn't play at all, and then is unwatchable. PS4 is my primary method of watching Crunchyroll. If an episode is shown as available, it should be there.

I'll continue to wait for an official answer.

Yeah, I had similar issues on the PS3. Today is a common example.

I have 3 shows to watch: HunterxHunter, Hamtora and Seitokai Yakuindomo season 2.

The normal progression is:
1. The episode shows available but really isn't so it drops back to the queue menu
2. The episode is available but in a lower resolution? Which isn't even watchable, The video is all fuzzy and the audio is garbled, so it is more like partially encoded.
3. The episode works correctly. However, today HunterxHunter and Seitokai Yakuindomo both stutter and freeze every 10 seconds or so while all the other shows I have watched this week replay just fine.

Sick had it correct. We push different encodes for each of out platforms. It can take 1-3 hours for a show to become available on our other supported devices once we have pushed encodes on PC. It used to be 8+. It's something we're working on reducing.
