I gotta say, I am not a fan of pure romance. I need something other than Romance as a stage to set up my characters, then the Romance between those characters becomes meaningful to me, otherwise it's just, how long will it take us to have sex?

That said, I really liked the romance in Mahou Sensei Negima. Especially between Ako and Negi using the grown-up spell.

I liked Ichigo 100%, but I only liked one character in it, Nishino Tsukasa. Toujou was fidgety, Satsuki spent all her time chasing after Manaka, and Manaka was a dufus. Nishino on the other hand, she kept trying to improve herself in different ways, she learned to cook, she starred in Manaka's movie, she grew, she was just such a wonderful girl... God if Manaka wasn't the main character in that it would have been perfect, I am going to say it right now, I hate beta males as main characters. Negi is by no means a beta, he is an oblivious alpha.

Kaichou was Maid-sama was decent. I liked Misaki. I did not like that Usui was so Prince Charming-ish. I don't like dainty flower princesses for heroines, and I hate prince charmings for heroes. Perfect people who will take care of all your problems do not exist, make an effort. This goes out to both the beta-male harem lovers out there, and to all the prince charming shoujo lovers out there.

Asu no Yoichi was an action romcom that I liked the romance in, mainly because of one of the main females, Ayame the younger sister. She made such an effort to break out of her weak tsundere shell that if she was a real girl I would have fallen in love with her. It's extremely rare for a tsundere to decide, I seriously don't want to be tsundere anymore. The main character Yoichi was okay, he wasn't a beta, but he was kind of a dufus like Naruto.

I think I have yet to find my perfect romance manga. What I essentially want is something that has both the hero and heroine making an effort to become better, stronger, people while falling in love. I really enjoy equal relationship stories where each person is sort of completes the other, but where neither is useless without the other.

Love Hina

Classy, funny, adventurous, exciting, and all with no obnoxious drama factor. There is drama of course, but it's more bearable than say Toradora or Kimi no Iru Machi.

I thought Love Hina was a great romance manga too.I loved that Manga/Anime because it was one of my firsts that I grew up with.but the only thing that bothered me was some of the Ecchi that ruined many great romantic scenes in the manga :/
the Anime didn't have those.

My selections here are Video Girl Ai and Sai Kano, both for the same reason: They show the joy of love, yes, but they also show the incalculable pain it can involve. To me, for a love story to be truly good, it has to make the reader hurt, at least a little.

I think the best romance is sort of unplanned, something the manga author didn't foresee from the start but just developed from the characters and the story. Two examples:

With its gag manga setup, obscene jokes, ecchi content and irreverent fun, GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) would be the last place for serious romance, but one emerged between the bully-loser pair Anko and Noburu.

In Bakuman, the romance between mangakas Hiramaru and Aoki was the end result of a running gag: the ever more over-the-top attempts of Hiramaru's editor to motivate his genial but lazy mangaka (who was modelled on Sorachi Hideaki, mangaka of Gintama).

Girl Friends! JK, I don't read much manga

Wait! Which one? The one by Morinaga or the one by Hokazono?

I mean, both are great, but they are distinctively different!

If I had to pick just one love story, I think it would have to be Nozoki Ana. It had everythig I like: darkness, light and ecchi.

A little known series called "Bokura Ga Ita" is the best romance anime/manga that I know of. Just recently found out that they made a live action film as well.

Dual meaning on the word straight there?

I agree that Citrus has great potential. It hasn't surpassed Girl Friends yet, or Sasameki Koto, for that matter. Sasameki Koto has a much better ending than most manga I have read, but the romantic progression (and PROGRESS) drops it behind GF in terms of pure romance. I love the story, but ...

For me it has to be Itazura na Kiss because it was the first romance anime I ever watched and nothing has compared to it (in my opinion) and for all those manga fans Itazura na Kiss is also a good read!

Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama. I watched the anime for this and I felt like the story was incomplete so I decided to read the manga and I absolutely loved it.
