I couldn't get into Gurren Lagann I watched like 5 episodes of it though. Is there a time skip in that anime? That would probably make me want to watch it more actually.

Gurren Lagann all the way. It's a truly epic and amazing anime, having someone crawling around in the dirt to throwing galaxies and having there be a natural progression to get to that point is freaking ridiculously awesome.

Also, this is so going to get moved to the poll section :P

TTGL's first half is better than the second.

KLK's second half is, so far, miles above its first.

Wait until the show is finished before comparing it. It's entirely possible for it to end up better than TTGL at the rate its going.

Gurren Lagann for sure. This show is great all the way from start to finish, while Kill la Kill takes awhile to get going. Both shows are amazing in their own right, but it's how things started that favors Gurren Lagann all the way.

Really? I had written off the series after a few episodes as too ridiculous to ever really shine. Maybe I'll try to get back into it if it's picked up so much.

It's odd. It's very much the opposite of TTGL in many ways, while also being extremely similar. TTGL's first half was fantastic, but it sort of petered out in the second half. Not much of note happened besides Kittan and the final battle, along with maybe Nia. Meanwhile, KLK started out more casually in the beginning before hitting this...this point in episode 16 when things got REAL. People tend to say "the ride never ends", but it's gotten to a point where it can be almost exhausting to watch (in a good way).

Even the protagonists are opposites. Simon was a young boy who had a calling, a reason to fight, but lacked the drive to fight. He needed to deal with his fear and lack of confidence. Meanwhile, Ryuko has more than enough drive to fight. She's got hotter blood than anyone in TTGL could have, but no clear direction. She doesn't know exactly what she's fighting for, so she fights everything. She needs to deal with her self-hate and her messed up past.

TTGL's main cast outshines KLK's at this current point, but KLK's side characters are a great deal more fleshed out than TTGL's. The plot escalates in similar fashion, but KLK's is not nearly as straight-forward as TTGL's was.

So overall, I really can't say which is better at the time, or even if you should continue KLK. You may not enjoy the second half. Heck, you may not even get to it. But as someone who will proudly call TTGL his favorite anime of all time, KLK is looking like it could stand right beside it if it plays its cards properly.

It's still ridiculous.

Chances are if you didn't like it earlier you won't like it now. I don't know about this "picking up so much" thing. I mean it's cool, I like the show, but it doesn't really feel all that different to me from the beginning. That's just my opinion.

OT my vote goes to TTGL. There were parts of it that I didn't like, such as the beginning of the second half when all the characters I liked so much had just turned into arrogant pricks, but the good parts of the show made up for it.

Ya, the second season is a huge timeskip from the first season.

I was watching the first 7 or so episodes of Gurren Lagann and I didn't like it at all however I like Kill La Kill and can't wait until the next episode, so therefore I'm gonna vote for Kill La Kill

i watched all of TTGL and honestly didnt think it was as great as a lot of people make it out to be. its good, certainly not amazing though. it just didnt bring enough new or interesting ideas to the table for me. yeah its kinda fun to take the whole "exponentially increasing battles" thing to the extreme, and there were a couple cool related themes (spiral imagery/ the way the show talked about believing in yourself). but beyond that the show got fairly bland imho, not to mention the characters and plot felt uninspired.

kill la kill while by no means a perfect show has been a lot more entertaining for me personally. the way they combine a lot of themes/ imagery together from everything from "the red string of fate" to "fashion as fascism" to "female empowerment vs male gaze/objectification" to "inverted good/evil imagery" has been a lot more clever and interesting. the numerous plot twists, while far from surprising, at least keep the story from feeling as simple and linear as TTGL did to me. i also think the humor has been a lot funnier this time around.

while TTGL isn't bad by any means, my vote is pretty squarely on KLK.

edit: also i dont understand people saying klk takes a while to get going. i was pretty entertained from epsiode 1 whereas in TTGL i started and then dropped the show 3 times before i finally made it past the first 5 episodes or so.

The fact that the answers to this question aren't one sided in the favor of TTGL has me worried about the future of anime...

If I had to spend the rest of my life in a universe where only TTGL or KLK existed, TTGL would win, no question.

KLK is an impressive piece of work and I respect it immensely, but TTGL transcends it.

I would strongly advocate seeing TTGL through episode 8 before committing it to the drop pile; dropping TTGL before episode 8 is kind of like dropping Cowboy Bebop before episode 5. You haven't seen what you're dismissing yet.

After that though if it's just not your thing I'd understand.
