Hi Crunchyroll users ,

Like the title says, how has watching anime/reading manga helped you in your life, did it get you through tough times and or remind you what it is to truly laugh or cry? Well that's why i'm asking!

Well before your divulge all of your secrets let me tell you how it helped me. A few years ago around my freshmen year in high school my friends and I all got really into drugs. Granted it was just smoking weed at first and at that point not affecting my life i didn't care but later on I got on to harder drugs. Just when it felt like my live was taking a crash course I found something so amazing on t.v. that it changed my life, I witnessed my first anime and it was Angel Beats . After that i was hooked on all things anime and through all the lessons it taught me about being a good person and realizing ones own potential I slowly started to stop using and wasting my money and changed my life for the better. well there you have it, anime helped me in a way I can never repay it (Other than watching/reading it all the time). So how has anime helped you?

P.S. Doesn't have to be such drastic change like mine i'm just curious if anime has helped others like myself

Without going in to great detail, I would say it has helped me with day to day life as most anime or manga is quite inspiring and motivational.

For example a lot of times in anime or manga they have the message of never giving up. (Gon, Rock Lee, Goku, etc)

Uncletim,

I want to personally thank you for sharing your story but also for serving our country ! I have a cousin who's in the navy and both grandpa's fought in the Korean Conflict, so i'm all for anybody who is brave enough to fight for their country. I'm glad your doing better and that anime has influenced your life in such a positive way. Once again, thanks for sharing your story and for fighting for our country. (Salute)

It was a really old manga called Great Teacher Onizuka or GTO. Really great manga, after all the life lessons taught, right at the end of the last chapter there's Onizuka along with all the kids he helped staring up at you, breaking the fourth wall for the first time and asking, "What is school to you?" And it completely changed my life, I started trying and I managed to finish high school with above average grades and an offer from the uni to top that I wouldn't say it was the only reason for me to start trying - but it gave me the push I needed.

Nice man! It always good to hear other kids who watched anime and took lessons from it to help themselves in real life problems. I'm glad you ended up doing well and maybe not entirely due to anime but I can see it had influences and like you said, "It gave me the push I needed"

I have the wonderful luck to be able to study anime professionally--if presenting a career path qualifies as "helping in my life," then I would say anime has done just that.

Hajime no Ippo got me into practicing boxing. Most anime with good fight scenes always make me want to train to become as badass and strong as those characters, even if they are fictional.

Well one example is this.
Madara Uchiha has taught me that this world is nothing but trash.

Don't get me wrong, I love anime, but it has NEVER been useful to me. In fact, all it did (with the help of tvtropes) was mess up my grade.

Keep at it: usually, university profs are far more receptive to the inclusion of that sort of material in your work. I did a presentation on tvtropes during my undergraduate studies, and did great with it. (Also wrote my honours thesis on Cthulhu.) There's still hope!

As for me, anime, and fiction in general, has had a large part in shaping my worldview. Stories are one of my passions, and I'd feel unfulfilled without them.

Hmmmm can't really say it has helped me at all. At least not much...

Anime has maybe taken up some of the time I used to spend on gaming or surfing Facebook or something... but that is just it there, I took some of my freetime I used on something and put it to something else. Not really a plus or minus there, in fact most people would say I am still just wasting my time.

Manga... I guess I could say Manga helped me some by getting me back into reading. Not Manga itself since that is like 90% drawings and 10% text... but Manga led to me finding some Light Novels, which of course is the reverse of a Manga with 90% text and 10% drawings. Before Manga I hadn't read anything outside of classwork since like Middle School.

OTHER than that... I guess I have tried to start drawing again because of Anime and Manga... but I since I am about as beginnerish as you can get in drawing, I can't really determine if that is the case or if I am just bored.

I'm sure I would have become a recluse without anime. Ironic, eh?
