I keep getting dumped into the "store", with a message at the top of the page that says:

"unable to gift memberships at this time"

WTF? It has been like that for two days now!!!

When will this be fixed? I have a credit card that is willing to squirt some money in your direction.

It's been like that since before Thanksgiving. Though they said that they're working on it, I'm starting to doubt that they'll do anything about it.

I wish they'd bring back the old way too. However, there are ways to work around this.

1) If a user has a public wishlist with a gift membership on their list, you can give them one by following the instructions here:

/forumtopic-831733/give-the-gift-of-crunchyroll-for-the-holidays-with-wish-lists

2) If not, and you know the person's email address, just follow the links to the gift memberships in that post--from there it will be pretty self-explanatory.

3) If not, and you don't know the person's email address, just follow the links to the gift memberships in that post, and put your own email address in as the recipient. After the code is emailed to you, you can copy the code and PM it to a user.

Since you have to scroll down a ways in that post referred to above, here are direct links to the different gift memberships in the store:

All-Access Membership
Anime Membership
Manga Membership
Drama Membership

Hope that helps.

Just an FYI on Gift Memberships:

I recently bought one for myself and it was not emailed to the email address I listed. I contacted customer support and they pointed me to my Order History where I was able to snag the activation code and redeem the Gift card. Just giving you a heads up in case you buy one for someone and it never shows up in their Inbox.

Check your Order History, Copy & Paste the activation link into a blank email, and resend it to your friend. Might have just been a glitch for my order, but I thought I'd save you the trouble if the same thing happens to you.

Cheers;

All of these link lead right back to the error message. Is there any other way to give a year membership as a gift?

Not currently.

Gift Memberships are temporarily disabled due to high amounts of fraudulent activity around them.

I'll see if I can't get some better messaging on the links.

Interesting. I wonder why this wasn't mentioned earlier.

Understandable. Thanks for the update.

I'm also really interested in seeing the gifting membership feature being brought back. Is there any update on it?

Guys, do you need me to type some html for you? Kind of a pain in the ass to have to look around for why I'm getting a 404 instead of a gift membership page... maybe just update that actual link at the bottom of the home page? Or remove it? Does anyone have five minutes today?

I'm starting to get tired of the incompetence that I find all over the internet. First paypal won't tell me why I cannot buy my membership

and now I had to contact the support just to find out something about why I get a 404 page.
How hard can it be to write an actual explanation of what is going on, and redirect the links to that, instead of just telling us "oh, that is not possible at the moment. try it again in a moment, ant I assure you that it still won't work."
I think crunchyroll has a great support. They really help you with every problem you might have. But why can't they just make their things work and be done with it? Even if they had to completely rewrite all code that has to do with gifting membership, they could finish it in some weeks. They could also add the option to buy non-recurring membership using paypal.

And what does "high amounts of fraudulent activity around them" mean? Is there some exploit in the system? Or are people selling gift memberships on the black market for millions of dollars? Come on, gifting membership isn't such a big deal, and I cannot think of a problem that couldn't be fixed in a day or two of coding, so what is the problem? Are you waiting for somebody to sign the paper to make it happen? Or are custommers just not that high on crunchyroll's priority list?

That's my opinion. Feel free not to share it.

Well, not that I'm at liberty to give you any specifics, but it's as I said. High fraud activity, we're working on it.

If what I'm working on goes through hopefully they'll be back up by the end of the week. That's provided things go fine on the engineering side.

Also, the resolution means more work for me. So yeah, I could tell them to halt work until we're able to address it properly rather than this work around that I want to do. (Which is fine with me. I've already got loads to deal with.)

Sorry they're not up, and sorry that my word doesn't mean a lick of salt.

The problem here is the lack of information, not the fact that the functionality doesn't work right now. From my point of view, there was some problem that needed fixing, but I did not in any way know what kind of problem it was, and if fixing it would be a matter of days, a matter of weeks, or if it might have gotten dropped completely.

Now, one question I have, what kind of problem is this? Is it a software problem, or a problem with how the system itself works? or is that information undisclosed as well?

As mentioned, it's a problem with high amounts of fraudulent purchases.

What I'm doing is having a system created where I'll have to manually check every 90 day and 1 year Gift Membership purchased along with all orders over $250.

This is a less than optimal solution, but if extra manpower means I can get this feature back to our userbase I'm going to do it.

It'll be back up once the devs have had time to build out the tool.

Looks like escalating the situation will prompt for a response rather than just saying "crunchyroll sucks. They won't let me spend my money on their service. Don't they want money? BOOOOOO".

From Baker:

If what I'm working on goes through hopefully they'll be back up by the end of the week.

I think that this is going to two or three weeks since the defunc of the crunchyroll store gift membership system. Additionally, it's going into seven months since the buddy personal user membership has been out of order; this is way back in Thanksgiving.

I'm just trying to figure out how fraud works with low cost transactions from $7 to $60. You're probably not going to tell out the public as not to give us ideas and such. For me, it's just a very curious thing.

Guess Hypothesis:

Since we're at the subject of membership system abuse, I highly suggest that you guys opt out the GUEST PASSES since it's just too easy for people to play around and farm with that. I don't know if you guys have a system in place with multiple user accounts, but I bet screening thousands of transactions is a load of work. Though, I don't really know the offset of the guest pass to membership conversion to profitability, so maybe the risk of doing this is worth it. Maybe.

Well, I look forward to what new system you guys have in store with the gifting. Thanks for the update.
