I keep waiting for Japan to tire of turning their own historical figures and those from China into females and turn to the east. The first time they announce an anime set during the United States Revolutionary or Civil War, but with all the important characters as females, my reaction will be less "WTF?" and more "Well, that took longer than expected".

No clue what Sengoku Basara is, but I'm with you on the Vietnam War idea. Especially if they made the OP and ED sound like 60s music. And if they made some homages to classic Vietnam War movies. Like this guy:

I always though goldrush would be good era because you could do Alaska or California have mining episodes with prospectors and sled dogs and lots of gun fights add some Indians even Steamships and the railroad tons of scenery for annimation
