hm.. I think I introduced a few friends to anime through Madoka, Higurashi, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (gotta justify the costs of those DVDs). and Pretty Cure..

So.. it might be that watching one of those "o.o omg, srsly" anime that isn't for pervs would work rather well.

The shock value helped.

Grave of the Fireflies is something...

Tell them how it made you feel and talk about how long its been since you've last seen it it before asking if they wanna watch it with you (and watch it anyway if they don't want to.)

....but honestly, if you have 160 DVDs, you should probably ask her to go through and pick one she thinks looks good. You might want to pre-select a little for quality, but if she picks then she'll like it more.

that's not a bad idea actually. but yes -- as you said -- i might have to pre-select a little...

i second Ghibli movies, even people who aren't into anime shows like those films, specifically Miyazaki's works.

Hide your copies of Boku no Pico, School Days, Nisemonogatari, Charger Girl Juuden-chan, Steel Angel Kurumi, Qwaser of Stigmata, and Queen's Blade...

i actually don't own too much like that! i do have all the monogatari series that's been released though and i agree nisemonogatari may be a little much!

not related maybe i should also hide FLCL as that's probably a bit of an overload!

It has a lot of western references and it's short.

I see no reason to hide it.

Anything released on western television is usually opened to a wide audience. Unless it's based on a certain franchise or focuses on gaming.

I'm not sure why everyone is recommending shonen titles or battle shows for a woman. (I'm not saying women won't like them, just the percentage chances are seriously low...)

If she can handle subtitles, I'd suggest one of the romcoms like "Say I Love You", maybe even "My Little Monster". Solid plot, decent characters, and zero fanservice.

Actually.. just as many of my friends talk about Naruto, Inuyasha, and Sword Art Online as much as they talk about Ouran High School Host Club or Fruits Basket.
I don't see the trouble.

Dragon Ball is a bit much though. Female characters simply shouldn't be annoying side-characters. As long as they can kick ass too, it's fine.

That's why Jojo's, Naruto, Attack on Titan, One Piece, and jRPGs are so popular.

Definitely echo the Ghibli suggestions.

I will also say that Makoto Shinkai's films are a good entry point as well. Just....make sure she's in a good mood before watching any of his films. They are great films, just.....typically they have downer-ish endings.

In terms of general series, Mushi-Shi is a pretty nice pick, imo. Especially because each episode is stand alone.

Beyond that, the slice-of-life genre as a whole is you friend here. Pick any of them really. Silver Spoon, Servant x Service, Working!!, etc. If it features people just living their lives, you can't really go wrong.

Then you can ask her what her favorite media genres are and go from there.

Thinking Clannad or angel beats both dubbed so think that would be a good start for her the only problem I have for a newbie with naruto or shows like that is they are to long and with her being new you don't want to have to try to get her to watch a show that long especially if she doesn't like it then its just a drawn out bad experience with anime and might not be able to get her to watch anymore

maybe something like Spice and Wolf, Maoyu, Monster, Stein's Gate... something that shows anime isn't just pure shounen action stuff..

Oh dear goodness.. You watched it TWICE!?

I tempered it by watching School Days twice after it.

It's a miracle I even trust Anime or the community anymore...

God bless you..

yes too many agreements here :D

nothing long or shounen (except for inuyasha and also kenshin, girls gravitate to it i find)
something ghibli or just a real good movie (Summer Wars, Kotonoha no Niwa, maybe even Tokyo Godfathers)
since she likes popular things how bouts some Attack on Titan or Psycho Pass, evangelion, if you really wanna gamble try SAO
and of course:
