Why do most people buy so many games on Steam but never play most of them?

The same question can apply to other gaming platforms. I have so many console, handle-held and PC games, but I've only beaten about half of them. The other 1/4 I played part way and never beaten them. The only 1/4 I bought and hardily ever touched, if at all, after buying them.

On the other hand, 1/4 of all games I've owned, I played many consecutive times, to the point where I've beaten them countless times. I've played certain games so many times that I'm literally bored of them and would never play them ever again. These games include Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros Melee & Brawl, Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker, Super Mario 64 and Pokemon Red & Yellow. There are still some games I would like to beat, because I think it is shame to have games lying around, never to be beaten or played. I think my goal over the spring and summer is to beat as many games I haven't beaten, before school starts in September of 2014.

I think most people buy more games than they can play because its tempting to buy something that's on sale. In fact, I never bought any Steam games that weren't on sale

Also, I've bought games because of hype. Some people claim a game is really good. I buy it. I play it for a few hours. I can't make any progress in it. So I just give up on it, and never play it ever again.

So what do you guys say? Are there any other reasons someone would buy more games than they could play?

I think you pointed to the main reason in your post. It is hard to turn down a game that looks good when it is %75 off. While ten or twenty dollars feels like real money, taking a chance on something when it is five or less feels like nothing.

And hey, I'll eventually get around to playing all those Steam games! (yeah, right)

Why not? Too busy to play all of those Steam games? I already own 29 games on Steam. I'm probably not going to buy anymore...even at a huge discount price, buying a huge number of games will max out my credit card eventually. I'll have to beat the games I already own.

Pretty much. with work, my other hobbies (skiing, guitar, anime ...) and spending time with my wife, my gaming time is limited. When I was in my 20s I had very little cash and a good bit of leisure time. Now that I'm in my 40's it is the reverse. Cash isn't an issue so I'll pick up something that is massively on sale on the off chance I may want to play it.

I don't buy a huge amount of games on steam, I'd say I have 10 - 15 games in my steam account I haven't played. But, I don't feel the need to play them before I buy another inexpensive game on steam.

Lol Ik the feeling. My steam account has 162 games [Some are F2P] on it and I've only played like 20. Summer steam sells make you go a little insane XD

That is why I haven't been buying games on Steam lately. I have 175 games on there already and have played less than a quarter of them, probably less than an eighth. A number of them were games that I wasn't interested in, but were in packages with games I was interested in, though. Sometimes it is cheaper to get a package that contains games you don't care about and games you do want to play, then it is to get the games you want to play individually. Even outside of steam, I have bought a couple sequels to games I enjoyed but never beat, because I was planning to play them after I beat the earlier ones in the series. So, those games ended up just collecting dust and never being played.

Out of my 300 games, plenty were from humblebundles. The rest were impulse buys. Promises of happy times at 90% off is just too enticing.

The reason I don't end up playing them - with how the sales goes I have an endlessly long list of games on reserve. Once i realized it I stopped buying completely, but it'll take months if not years to trim the numbers down especially when there are great non-steam games that keep me busy like VNs, LoL and SC2.

Because sales.

I never buy unless its a sale, or its a game that I really want. Those sales I usually wait for those big bundles the summer and winter sales bring. Sure some of the titles I don't think I would play, others I think I would get too, and the rest are ones I actually wanted.

That said though I still have like only 50 games. I haven't bought anything since last year around August I think.

But I kind of relate to the buying a game and barely touching them or beating them.

I have 10 3DS games, which I have only had a 3DS since Christmas. Of those 10 I have only beat one, and have only played 6 of them, 4 still have yet been played.

Same with my XBox One, I have 4 games there, one has yet to be touched, the other 3 have been played but not beaten.

PC games is a bit different for me, probably cause I play the PC more. But everything I own I have played. Most have been beaten at some time or another.

In my case it's mostly bundles and the odd magazine version that redeems on Steam. Which reminds me I really ought to cancel that magazine subscription...
Most bundles, if they're interesting for me at all, have two games I'm interested in and 4+ I don't really care for. Yet I get those bundles anyway since the whole bundle ends up being cheaper than just those two games I wanted.
As all my gaming friends consider indie games to be horrible - because, apparently, graphics are everything these days - I end up redeeming the excess games on my own account on the off chance I might want to play them sometime.

I have about 236 games registered on Steam (counting actual games by hand, Steam itself tends to count expansions and episodes as games of their own showing 292 games on my profile). 162 of them are indie titles.

Of the 236 games I own 24 are in my "not interesting" category, likely never to be played, and 61 I have yet to start playing.

When did I get so many games? This is the first time I've looked at the number of games I own on Steam and my owned/played ratio is actually better than I expected.
Guess that, along with me mostly playing MMOs the past few years, explains why I stopped buying more than three games a year.
I remember 7 years ago I used to buy a new game almost every month. Now, if I feel like playing something new, I can just turn to my backlog.

I think the real issue is Humble Bundle...you usually get 5+ games for only like $10...I may or may not own a ton of Steam games I have no intention of ever playing

Because we are hoarders and value seekers.

Not to mention having 5000+ games makes me look 10000000% ultra nerd cool.

Procrastination and lack or loss of interest.

Happened to me a few times too.

Yup. that Humble Bundle, 5 games for 5$.. I might only play one, but that one alone is worth $5 of fun.
