If you’re looking for something profound or an ironic commentary on the present state of anime and the idea of female models of anime, you’ll be very disappointed. This anime is merely a gimmicky vehicle for an internet darling icon – move along.

Sonico [Nico-chan by her friends] is your average gir…what am I talking about? Of course she isn’t! Sonico is the mascot for the Japanese game company Nitroplus and was first introduced in 2006 and ever since has become one of the more recognized anthro-anime characters out there on the internet…as well as one of the bustiest. You can’t ignore her and the anime makes no bones about who she is. She is a model, guitarist and all round brainbox with a ‘nice body’. The thought of her having her own anime is both puzzling and logical; puzzling in what you can do with the character and logical in that it makes perfect sense to pop out an anime to tie in with Nitroplus’ games and media related to Sonico. Genius…marketing-wise. In terms of overall creative integrity, not so much.

You get the feeling that there’s not much going on with the anime and that’s the case when you spend the first 20% of the opening episode with Sonico trying to get up and getting started with becoming a crazy cat lady with 5 cats sharing a small studio apartment. Then the rest of the episode chronicles Sonico’s day at school, at a modelling shoot and then jamming out with her band. The show is trying to portray her as being a capable, attractive, intelligent and talented young girl but it all feels somewhat staged and false. Not only that, it’s also a little dry. My spirit was only somewhat lifted when Sonico’s manager appeared. Her manager wears a traditional Japanese mask and looks a total badass which kept me going for the rest of the episode.

It’s not like I thought SoniAni [the title of the anime] was terrible. It’s not. But it’s certainly not good. It invokes a resounding…meh. It’s not bad, but it’s predictable. One-dimensional. Eye-roll inducing. Mediocre, at best. It feels like it has no real grounding behind it or over-riding arc. You get the feeling that each episode will be Sonico encountering a new job, song, school project and having to at first struggle with it and then prevail in some contrived and obvious manner. There are far better anime out there if you want something with a much more stimulating plot and character spread. The only stimulating thing about SoniAni is…well, I’ll leave it for you to figure out. The only thing I’m figuring out is this. Are those headphones surgically attached or does she have very ugly ears?

I'm actually enjoying this show which I have found to be a decent, but still relaxing, slice-of-life anime. I also think the hate against Sonico (at least how she acts in the anime) is unfair and she is not portrayed nearly as poorly as some seem to think.

Whatever. I'm enjoying it, at least, and I don't think it's that bad.

So many mixed feelings about this anime. I watched it at first just out of morbid curiosity, wanting to see just how terrible it would be. I was surprised, though, it's not nearly as bad as I'd expected. Not bad, however, does not mean good. It's so incredibly bland. Perfect heroine whose only faults are carefully calculated to be as moe as possible, a constant barrage of almost fanservice, and a borderline non-existant plot. Yet I can't stop watching for some reason, even at the expense of other shows in my cue that I KNOW are much better.

The biggest thing that bothers me about this show is how carefully calculated it is to hit all the otaku buttons without ever quite offending anybody. Much lingering of the camera on chests and thighs, but no full-on breast of panty shots. Stories that are almost, but not quite, completely bland and boring. A character who can do everything and do it all perfectly, beautiful, smart, sweet, polite to a fault, helpful to everybody, her only faults being that she's a slow riser and has an addiction to sweets and a very mild clumsiness. It's exactly the kind of show that I would LOVE to hate, but just can't quite bring myself to even dislike.

Yet the one thing that I think keeps drawing me back, is that the show just has a ton of heart. It's obvious that somebody involved actually has a lot of love for Sonico and really tries hard convince everybody else to love her too. This seems to be the theme for the anime I've been watching this season all of the shows I've been following have just been full of heart and love.

It's a slice-of-life anime that doesn't make much of an attempt to be more than cute and relaxing, and it succeeds at being cute and relaxing. There's a lot of fanservice, but it's surprisingly subdued and tasteful, not to mention rarely feels terribly out of place. If you're looking for a pervasive and protracted plot, or complex and conflicted characters, you've gotten lost in your search for something to watch.

I don't get the impression that Sonico is portrayed as perfect in almost all areas, but rather competent in what she enjoys, which is a welcome relief from all loser protagonists you see so often in anime. If anything, I find her more realistic, because she's not there to fill a slot that's supposed to be there, despite realism not exactly being a theme in the series.

It's a pleasant anime.

Was directed to the anime by a review at J-List and if I don't think hard and just watch for enjoyment values, I am good with this anime. Sure, Sonico is nearly too good to be true and the episodes are pretty much cookie-cutter but that seems to be the strength of the show. The moment they stray from the formula, the show becomes tedious and dull. It is a decent diversion after a long day at work.

I don't know why. But there still feels like, where I read the review, as though she's not allowed to be all those things.

…as well as one of the bustiest....

Would it have got a better review if Super Sonico had been such a well-endowed girl? Like the stereotype that attractive girls are not allowed to be smart girls and vice-versa.

Also, when I watch it, I get a general gist that she's an intelligent girl. But she's still fairly 'dizzy'. In that she's not very good at using that intelligence.

But anyway. I've been watching this show. I'm not watching it because there's an attractive girl on the screen. I'm watching it because the story is good. There are plenty of emotional moments in there, I've laughed, I've cried, I feel happy to have watched it afterwards and there is some great music in there.
