Jean d'Arc. Bonus points if it were to be of the Jean of the Fate/Stay series, with an epilogue of Guilles de Rais going insane.

Not too many animes touch on slavery in a historic sense, some touch on it, like Morgiana from Magi, or Now and Then, Here and There, but nothing broadly encompassing the issue. Perhaps an anime that reflects the African Slave Trade would be interesting. The same goes for the conquering of the Native Americans. Perhaps an anime where the hero is the last Geronimo. Of course, adapted for Japan.

I think maybe an anime covering the dawn of civilization would also be interesting if done correctly. Man first creating cities and culture. I do like animes that have that feel to them like Maoyu and Log Horizon (thus far.).

WW II

More into the Kamakura period of Japan.

American Revolutionary War. You know, to appeal to kids who are not into history and what not.

Have the American Revolutionary War appeal to kids? Can the American Civil War appeal to teens?

Probably go with something along the lines of the Crusades or maybe Alexander the Great?

Not really historical but many of the Greek mythologies would be pretty cool to animate like Ulysses

If that were possible, it would have to be narrated by Morgan Freeman.

I would like the manga shokoku no altair and gunka no batlzar to be adapted into anime. They are set in really awesome time periods and have a lot of politics and complicated tactics involved.

An particular moment in history will be probably world war 1 dogfights or world war 1 in general. Many different angles to approach it and also from a true cultural perspective, it will be interesting how other people thought of the war that defined the 20th century.

Winter War would be epic, when Finland managed to fight so bravely against russia, even tho Finland "lost" the battle, they still think Finland is the winner when you watch the numbers.

Protagonist would be Simo Häyhä! Famous finnish sniper who managed to get the most confirmed kills with a sniper rifle in a war!

Would be epic!

Ah what a great idea for a topic... historical allegories are one of my favorite subjects in [live act] movies or animation. I'm surprised by some fantastic ideas so far- Jean d'Arc (a.k.a "Joan of Arc" Anglicized) is perfect for the anime medium, although we'd have to grant they would try to sexualize her somewhat.. Roman history has a ton of events that would make great anime, Magi Kingdom of Magic hints at a Roman-style fictional empire in its story but it's not quite close to historical events; the Punic Wars, the Roman Civil war with the rise of Caesar Augustus, or the fall of the empire would all make great stories. The best events I think are ones that are distant enough in the past to allow a wide range for writers to create fictional characters who are caught up in historical events- Russian Revolution is one I would have never thought of but that would be tough from a Japanese perspective.
I'll throw in the suggestion of perhaps the Cold War- an anime about lovers on either side of the Berlin Wall has always been a story I thought was waiting to be written- and it would be fascinating to animate the East German society with its ever-present secret police, militarized border, communist monuments, red flags and Trabant cars. A second idea would be anime about the space race- including a version of the lunar landing- anime has for 50 years dealt with outer space and futurism- but why not confront it from a perspective of realism and history? Animators have shown already a passion for rendering correct space ships- my favorite is the Colombia Space Shuttle in one of the late episodes of Cowboy Bebop. The whole point of doing an anime about the space race would be to animate real rockets- I would love to see an animated liftoff of Saturn V.. oh man!

Subjects to avoid would be really violent wars... I was surprised to find out there was a beautifully animated story about Anne Frank, and there is another about a survivor of the Khmer Rouge revolution (Cambodia) as well as Grave of the Fireflies... those are wonderful stories but they are so tough to do (and to watch) and it gets real prickly to deal with tragic events.
