It all depends on my mood. But I probably come back to light-hearted slice of life most often. Whether it's real life or another show I watched, CGDCT are my emotional equalizers.

"Psychological" is definitely mine. I like the provoking stories, the opportunities for reflection, and the emotional resonance. If anything else wants to get close it better pack a fairy-tale romance or the beauty of the human heart.

And if you hand me all three together I'm like:

I definitely prefer romance comedies, but I can watch most anime though my list of watched anime would say otherwise.

Fantasy, unequivocally.

After that, anything with good characters and a good story.

Fantasy blended with slice-of-life is probably my favorite combination of genres.

Literary. As a lit scholar, I'm in it for the character development, and my favorite anime tend to be those that really get into their characters' heads. It's all about human drama and internal conflict. Some favorites include Monogatari, Welcome to the NHK, and The Tatami Galaxy.

Fortunately for me, my favorite kind of stories can be found combined with pretty much all other genres, so I enjoy a rather wide variety of anime. My favorites tend to deal with character quite directly and overtly, but there's character development to be found across the board, and I can enjoy any sort of content as long as the characters are interesting.

As for runner-ups, I'd say I favour dark comedies, romance/drama, psychological anime, supernatural anime, sci-fi, and mysteries.

Anything that is very entertaining:
Action, Comedy, Adventure, Mystery, Fantasy/Sci-fi.
Most of those are blended together in shounen, making for some of the most complete anime.

Good Psychological anime is probably what i'm looking for, but when i can't find any, i'm just going for romance.

Comedy for me. As long as the humor is original.
Why comedy? Laughter is wonderful!
Now, the more serious reason:
Comedy is, I have found, the best way to learn about the characters. Through proper use of comedy, you can learn what the characters like, what their goals are, and generally determine how serious a situation is.
For me, comedy helps break an otherwise boring story. If it weren't for the comedy, I probably would never have watched Clannad, Little Busters, Beyond the Boundary or my current favorite anime series Chuunibyou. Without the comedy, I would have felt that anime like those would have been just anime versions of stupid love stories with over the top drama.
As such, I have great respect for comedy. In stories that would have otherwise been stagnant and dull, comedy keeps the gears of a story turning.
