My name is Raizier Shusuke Helusen. I am an instigator. I am unmovable. I am King.

Shu repeated those thoughts countlessly in his head as he picked up a wooden bucket of cold water. Bathing on the chilly morning invigorates him. He closed his eyes as he shampooed his hair in premium horse oil and let the soap trickle down his bare chest.. Massaging his shoulder blade with his right hand, his other hand reached out for a scrub. He tilted his head slightly in the reflection of the filthy mirror.

Even the filth of the mirror cannot hide this muddy being.

The conversation with his former fiancee left him in much doubt. Frustrated, he used a little too much strength to scrub his back. He winced as he touched the rawness of his skin. After a final wash, he stepped out of the bathroom, naked. His loyal butler appeared before him with a freshly laundered suit. Shu casually dried his hair and closed his eyes. He needed sleep. Badly.

"How is the Princess?" he inquired indifferently.

"Recovering. At a very slow rate," the butler replied with a lot of emphasis on the last two words.

"It doesn't matter," Shu shot a glance at his stern butler. "This must be of a great shock to her."

The butler took a bold step and leaned in. "She said 'Queen' repeatedly."

Shu was beginning to feel unsettled. Someone is ruffling his feathers and he hate being touched. His mood was worsening at every doubtful thought.

An idea grows with strong roots. The sapling must be crushed before it takes a strong foundation.

Shu dismissed his butler who gratefully headed to his private room for a well-deserved rest. Meanwhile, Shu walked into the Princess room unannounced. The sleeping princess paid no heed to this intrusion.

"Until now, you have never experienced this. There is a first time for everything. No exceptions," he muttered as he saw the contorted face of a princess in nightmare.

Shu summoned his inner ka. He closed his eyes and visualized a spiralling black staircase which soon transformed into a viper. It snared its fangs and dived at Shu's throat. He hardly flinched as he felt the intoxicating effect of the sweet poison. At last, a modulated voice escape Shu's pale lips. It was heavily enchanted with honey and flowers that makes one unable to ignore or even reject.

"Sleep, my sweet child. Let the worldly worries be bygones by morning and awaken to the sweet melodies of the spring. Abandon your courtly desires and release your fear. Fall into warm arms of tomorrow. Your King lies in him and your future is his. Let your dreams fly free at his commands. For he shall lead you to Heaven's Seventh gate."

The captivating voice eased the Princess' pains in her otherworld. Shu rubbed her temple and smooth out her frowning brows.

Shu left as quietly as he came. He was beyond exhaustion and collapsed outside the Princess room, sound asleep in his own world. Magic was never his strong point.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snow felt a sudden change of emotion from the depths of her heart. She was in her dreamland - her imagination world where she blocked out every voices out of her mind. This is the place where she could be the pure girl of her dream. Her dreamland was a meadow of lavenders with winds blowing along the cool angelic symphony.
For the first time in forever, a certain voice broke free into her little world.
"Sleep, my sweet child. Let the worldly worries be bygones by morning and awaken to the sweet melodies of the spring. Abandon your courtly desires and release your fear. Fall into warm arms of tomorrow. Your King lies in him and your future is his. Let your dreams fly free at his commands. For he shall lead you to Heaven's Seventh gate." - the voice was sweet and rang a bell in Snow. She stood up, hr inner struggle ended with ease. Even in her own dreamland, Snow never smiled. The voice left her with a new feeling. But what is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Snow woke up as the sunlight shone shyly on her face. She sat up straight - ignoring the pain the wounds and bruises were causing. For a moment, she recalled someone breaking into her imaginary dreamland. Recalling also, the nightmare from the night before - Snow suddenly noticed for three nights straight - she hadn't been able to sleep well.

She limped into the bathroom - looking into the mirror. Who would believe a disastrous looking person like her is the princess of the country?

You're dead, Snow....don't ever once again act so stupid ! , she thought to herself. Time to reborn, time to do what you'd swore to His Majesty...

She bathed - ignoring all pain from the wounds and changed into the dress the butler had prepared last night. Snow was looking extremely pale - her lips were of faint pink as she had just recovered from the high fever. She looked like a bisque doll now - snowy fair skin, silver hair with curls that grows naturally in a fashion that every women wanted and her fire-ruby eyes that brings life to this perfect doll.

Snow decided to step out of the room - to get some fresh air. She opened the door and surprised to find a collapsed Shu in front of the door. For a full minute she stood still and looked down at him, then she rushed to his side.

"Wake up!" Snow called a few times to no answer. Shu was deeply asleep. She sighed as she looked around, trying to get the butler but he was out of sight. Snow thought for a while and decided to carry him in herself - an action very unlikely to be done by any noble lady, what more of a princess?

She placed his left arms around her shoulder as she placed hers around his waist. Slowly but steadily she carried him in. Shu was heavy and strong for her to handle and she knew he wouldn't need her help - but she couldn't leave him alone outside. Sleeping in the corridor would catch a cold, and with a person as snobbish as Shu - he would fear repercussions from the people.

Shu's butler hid in the shadows of the corridor and watch the Princess struggle under the weight of his Master. He stifled a snort. Was it contempt? The butler headed off to town to prepare for immediate departure. His master is very particular with tight schedules and the plan will carry on as long as the Helusen dictates. Or as long as they can stand....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The innkeeper was in a grumpy mood. It had been a sleepless night with his distinguished guests but the mysterious butler was the biggest problem of all. The unreasonable requests at ungodly hours and the lists of tasks to be done for smooth departure were keeping him on his toes. Even his mistress could not quell his frustrations with her amorous advances. Stuffing a bowler hat upside down on his head and forcing his chicken into a bag instead of his bread, the innkeeper carried a stack of letters in his other hand and headed to the nearby post office. So many letters from a single guest!
His mood did not improve when the town's children were unusually active in the morning. After almost colliding with one, he shouted curses at a disapproving mother and hustled off. Upon delivering the letters, he was shocked to find the crowd began forming at the town square.
"By the blazers of the Sun, what is going on today?" he demanded of anyone he grabbed in the crowd.
"It's the Circus! The infamous Bejewelled circus has come to town!" a man double his age replied excitedly in a loud, croaking voice. "All hail the Helusens for bringing them right under the nose of the Kingdom!"
"What-" before the innkeeper could ask further, more people began pushing past him to confirm the circus poster with their own eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Shu snored softly in the bed. A small smile on his charming boyish face hid the cool demeanour of a noble known for his heartbreaker status in court and his mature approach to his family's disgrace.

Snow looked up from the book she was reading at Shu - who was surprising smiling rather innocently in his sleep. Her eyes widened - as they found a rare treasure right before her. She wondered what was he dreaming of. She stared at him for a long moment before realising it - she stood up abruptedly, blushing. She shook off his face out of her thoughts and decided she can leave him alone in her room - nothing seemed to be a bother to this young man now.

Snow got out of the inn into the noisy street. Some of the people recognised Snow and hurried towards her - each of them fond to finally meet the princess in person. The princess answered each of them with kindness and smile - she found them much nicer than her other family members. The late King had left a good impressions on the people of the country - and with the presence of the princess, the only pure royal blooded heir in the monarch, everyone loves her dearly. On top of that, she was always caring out for them.

As she walked out, a large crowd in the townsquare caught her attention. She walked towards the crowd and as they spotted the princess' arrival, they formed a lane for her to walk in between towards the poster. She looked at the poster and was shocked to find such an activity done behind her back.

"What's the princess doing here?" she heard a few people whispered. "It's the princess!"

Her face betrayed no surprise as she continue to stare at the poster. She was in fact getting furious - but she could endure it. She knew there would be someone else who would be more furious - the Queen.

Snow pretended to read the poster as she looked at the crowds. Some people were still in support of the previous dethroned monarch - Shu's family. The people were in in fact divided to two major groups - one supporting the previous monarch, the other supporting the one the late King built.

Snow narrowed her eyes. She suddenly realised that the late King was up to something - by arranging an engagement of her with Shu. She knew he needed her to affirm a certain relationship - but she never know what it was.

"Your majesty..."a steward stammered.

The Queen simply opened her eyes slightly as her personal maid powdered her face and an experienced masseuse pressed aher knuckles into vital points of her feet. The Queen was in a very good mood until the steward entered.

"Red or blond wig, your majesty," a handmaid entered after her steward.

She held up a hand and the female attendants bowed their way out.

"Speak up. Aren't you a knight-in-training?"the Queen ordered as she examined a perfectly manicured nails.

"it's the lower town. The circus was given permission to set up there," the steward said quickly, stringing all the words together as he prayed with eyes closed for a miracle.

The Queen was silent. The steward felt more uncomfortable by the minute. She got up slowly and approached the trembling steward. He was close to crying as her imposing presence bent over him.

"Tell me...Is it the town governed by the Helusens?" she whispered in a low tone.

The steward could only stammer. She needed no more information and struck the back of his head hard with her elbow. He fell to the floor with terror frozen on his face. She massaged her elbow and allowed her next guest in. This time, it was her personal guard. In the muscular arms of her tall guard was a letter sealed with the noble wax. The guard passed the letter and left with the corpse silently. The Queen was left alone in her thoughts and an unopened letter. Then, she summoned her royal advisor and secretary. A revolt must be quelled swiftly like the wings of a hawk on the height of its hunt.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A carriage pulled up behind the Princess. Shu's butler got out elegantly and asked politely for the Princess.
"Young master Shu is on his own carriage home. He asked me to accompany you to anywhere you want to go but we must leave this town immediately.".
Snow looked up at the butler. She raised an eyebrow and facing the butler now - the crowds looked at them in silence. Some of them recognised the butler as the Helusens' family butler. They wondered why would the Helusens' family butler appeared before the princess.
Snow smiled at him. She went into the carriage and looked out at the butler.
"You may retreat back to Shu...", she said as she was deep in thought. "Remind Shu to always wear the pendant I gave - the one with my seal, if anything happens to me...that seal should be able to protect him for a short while".
The Princess' seal - was declared by the late King before his death bed that it would be the highest royal ascent for as long as the Queen should sit as the temporary ruler of the country. The Queen rejected the idea - but with the increased in numbers of ministers supporting the princess increases, the Queen must bound to whatever order stamped by the Princess' seal. In other words - the Princess' seal was the only instrument that protected Snow for the past few years.
Princes and princesses had went missing mysteriously over the past few years and Snow had always believed it to be the act of the Queen. She was one of the few that still survived - but she doubt the Queen will let her go. The queen hated her - she was not only the illegitimate daughter of her husband - but she was also her twin sister's child with the man she loved. Now that she was coming of age, the Queen should felt more threatened.
"I will be returning to the palace", Snow declared. "Thank you, uncle...you'd been helpful."
In the near distance, trumpets announced the dreaded arrival of a royal messenger. A man clad in pompous suit of blue and gold appeared with a stampede of knights at his heels, scattering the crowds. He cleared his throat importantly and with a boomin voice, he commanded silence.
"In the royal degree, signed by Her Majesty personally, no performance of any sorts are allowed in towns not within the premises of the Capital. Any violation of this rule or suggestions of festivals not approved by the royal counsel will be immediately burned down and the instigator sentenced to death. that is all."
The deafening sounds of the trumpets went off like a siren as the royal messenger and his protectors returned to the Capital. Murmurs of disapproval and dissatisfaction ran through the crowd. Until now, small festivals celebrating various gods and events went unnoticed in small towns. The butler had one hand gripped on the door of the carriage and a shadow of a smile cross his face.
"Now, my Lady. I don't see how your visit to the Palace would justify anything. Please return to the manor if you have nowhere to go. Young Master Shu clearly ordered your safe return to his side. Please do not forget your current position in the helusen Family."
Snow was mad - she was seriously furious now. Not at the butler. Not at the sudden announcement. But at the Queen. Biting her lips as the butler on board the carriage - Snow looked out of the carriage window, without a smile on her face. The queen always managed to step into her plans - their silent war had been ongoing for years after the late King's death and it never seemed to have an end.
Why am I being mad with the Helusens' event being cancelled?, she asked herself. That wasn't even my plan...
Snow thought a while and could only come up with a rather weak reason - that the town people were looking forward to the circus. It had been years since they last celebrated some event in a big scale.
The carriage pulled to a stop in front of Shu's manor. Snow deliberately stepped down with the help of the butler - and looked straight at Shu.
Shu was leisurely examining the new plot of land watered for a new batch of purple roses to arrive later that day. He struck up a merry conversation with his gardener. Sensing a hostile arrival, he straightened up from the rose bed and faced his fiancee.
"Ah. My Princess. I trust Uncle has taken good care of your every needs on the way here? Harry is preparing tea snacks now if you are hungry," he said with smiling eyes, as if the day has begun on a good start.
There was hardly any indication of how the earilier events had affected him.
Snow looked around. It was only her fourth day here - she hadn't been walking around the manor's garden since her stay here.
"You joining me for tea snacks?" Snow asked - she doubted he'll say yes but out of conscious, the question slipped out naturally.
She couldn't imagine the snobbish, cold Shu would actually sit down with her at the tea table that faces the beautiful garden - to enjoy a cup of tea. It doesn't seemed to fit in somehow.
Shu stooped to her line of sight and his deep blue eyes reached intently into hers. He held her glance for a long while before Harry came into scene with a temporary set up of a pavilion for their afternoon tea. He broke away but not before waving an index finger in her face.
"When you become a Helusen, learn to expect the unexpected."
Shu strolled to the table under the pavilion as Harry pulled out a white loin clothed garden chair for Shu's inspection. Shu nodded and the maids gently guided Snow to her seat opposite of Shu. Tea and scones were served gradually. Closing his eyes, Shu savored the tea and looked serene in the spring weather.
In the distance, clapping of hooves could be heard but Shu would not let that disturb his peace.
"A letter from the Queen!" Harry announced after he received the unexpected arrival of a royal messenger.
The horse galloped away. Harry approached his Master with slight anticipation. It was, after all, Harry's first time being caught in a strange turn of events involving royalty. Shu tore the letter open. It was an invite to the biannual Ball for all Nobles. Shu grinned. An invite from the Queen to the Helusen family was rare and even rarer in person.
"What do you say we announce our engagement at the ball?" Shu asked without looking up.
Snow couldn't but stared into the deep mesmerizing eyes of Shu's. He kept her sight in his - there was no violence nor force but she couldn't tore them apart. When Shu finally tore it off, Snow found herself breathing again. Her heart was slowly stolen away by Shu.
Sitting down opposite of Shu, she couldn help but occasionally steal a few glances at him.
Expect the unexpected? Becoming a Helusen??
Snow drank the tea in silence as she interpreted the words with her face slowly blushing. - revealing a beautiful red rosy cheeks. Why is he saying in a manner that I will be his? , she thought to herself.
Hearing the arrival of the Queen's letter - all the embarrassing thoughts building up inside her mind was pushed aside abruptly. She turned around and looked at Shu as he opened the letter. His grin was the answer - he was up to something and he'd been using her all this while for his certain 'plan'. But the next question he asked caught her off guard.
Snow thought a while - the Queen would be furious to know that they had affirmed the engagement. Shu was the prince of the previous King and Snow, by all means have the purest royal blood running in her vein. The Queen would feel threatened with the engagement. Snow looked up at Shu. She wondered if the engagement would ever mean anything more than just status and power to him.
It's the royal ball..... can we announce it without interruption from the Queen?, Snow thought - recalling her so many failed attempt when it comes to dealing with the Queen in her ball. What did he intend to do.....
"Becoming a Helusen..... I'm supposed that I should agree to what my husband have in plan?" Snow asked as she consented to his suggestions. "But, are you sure about it? Once you announce it, there's no turn back."
She knew Shu hated woman - surely she was no exception. Can he bear with seeing her everyday in the near future?
Shu overlooked her inquiries and announced shortly.
"The ball will be held in a week. We have much preparations to make."
Shu nodded to his butler who mysteriously appeared at the spot of Shu's glance.
"We need to prepare gifts for the Queen. It seems," Shu continued with darkening smile. "Her majesty would host it near my town. Very near."
It's obviously a message for me...but what I have thrown into fire cannot be returned. I must stoke it to my advantage.
Shu left the Princess in the gardens as the maids (including the big-breasted one) came to attend to her. One of the maids was quite reluctant to serve the Princess but on Harry's watch, she feared angering the Master more. Instead, she satisfied herself with occasional kicking of the Princess chair followed by insincere apologies.
Shu entered the cool shade of his manor and ordered for a bath to be prepared. The spring humidity was not to his liking. A scream in the kitchens captured his full attention. Despite warnings and pleas of his servants trembling outside the kitchen, he forced his way into the Chef's territory. Instead of the usual pompous, stout fellow shunting around, Shu saw him squeezing unsuccessfully on the corner of the kitchen counter as a green snake slithered towards him. With a bemused expression, Shu 'tortured' his chef further by not doing anything. The chef was close to fainting when Shu made a quick sweep at the snake. The green, thin creature recoiled at Shu's touch but barely bared its fangs. the servants held their breath as they watched their Master approaching the snake without precaution. There was a high-pitched scream as the washer boy faint; Shu led the snake onto his arm after gainging its trust. The young, handsome man and his new pet headed to a warm, wine filled bath with a plate of roasted chicken trailing behind in the hands of the poor head chef.
Snow stared out at the garden as Shu left the tea session - not attending to her question. She had pretty much expected that part of him. Snow continued to enjoy the tea snacks - even for a short moment, it had been a while since she last enjoyed some peace. However, her quiet moment was soon disrupted when one of the maids occasionally kicked off her chair. She got so annoyed to the point that she stood up abruptly - frightening some of the maids there.
Snow pulled off and retreated into the manor - where she slowly find her way towards the library. She didn't think that maid welcomed her - it was Trianna, as snobbish as her master. She remembered how Trianna acted on her first day here. Snow looked down at herself and compared with Trianna - Trianna is a woman with big bosom, where else Snow's is probably just right for her body built. At least she wasn't flat chested and she has the curves.
Maybe she has a crush on him , she thought - the late King wasn't her favourite man in the world. She hated the idea of polygamy - the late King seemed to be able to pull anyone onto the bed with him, even with the maids. Or maybe they were already in that kind of relationship....
Snow stopped of all sudden on top of the staircase. Harry, who had been tagging behind her looked up at her. Snow started imagining Shu's fabulous life - she hadn't really got to know him much, but well enough to know he hated women yet famous among them. He was every women's dream man. And no matter how much Shu hated woman, he's still a man - there should be a part of him that goes after woman's body whether or not there is love or hate. She recalled the fascinating kiss they shared - he could kiss her with such intent. He must had also did it with many other women. Snow imagined Shu kissing Trianna in the same manner - she almost puked at the imagination.
I am to marry a womanizer like papa? Snow shivered to the thoughts and dismissed Harry for some privacy. Maybe after the marriage, claiming the throne and having a prince....I should surrender myself to the elf and die. Snow can't stand man who practices polygamy - she knew the pain of being an illegitimate child as well as having half-siblings.
Having found the library, Snow walked to her favourite spot by the window and took a seat. She was waiting. She was plotting. In a week's time she'll see her other 'mother'. One that wants her head off badly. Snow slowly watches the cloud moving - the library was the only room she could find that mute out every sound. As her eyes looked around the garden - she found something interesting at the far corner of the garden. She hurried back to the garden - the tea table was gone, the maids were gone and Harry was no where in sight. She walked towards the far end of the garden - and found two little filthy children hiding behind some bushes.
How did they get into this land? , she wondered as her presence alerted the children - which one of them, the oldest one stepped out with a knife in his hand aiming at the princess.
The princess looked at the child from head to toe. He was from the lower town - his clothing explained it all. The child was trembling in tears as he held the knife when the other one, a girl stood out and hid behind him.
"Brother....", the little girl said in tears - she was trembling as well. "Isn't she the princess?"
Snow nodded. "Why are you both here? How did you get into this neighbourhood?"
"B-Bring out the Helusen! I must kill him! Because of him bringing in the circus to the town, the Queen killed our father!" the boy shouted in tears. His father had been working in the palace for years - he was one of the knight-in-training who the Queen killed heartlessly when the news she did not desire reaches her.
Snow simply shook her head as she knelt down in front of the scared children.
"The Helusens are not wrong. They wouldn't have intended this to happen", Snow told the children - she doubted that very much but she believed in Shu. Snow slowly make her way towards the young boy and gently removed the knife from his grip and put it down beside her. Smiling, she hugged both the children.
"No one is wrong here - not the Helusens, not the Queen, not your father, not the circus and definitely not you", Snow said as she hugged the children tighter. "The wrong ones here is the human's heart - where they just desire more and more. Greediness, lust, pride, envious, wrath, gluttony and possibly sloth as well"
Releasing them from her embrace, the princess smiled as she saw the children crying uncontrollably. Losing their father had caused them too much shock and sadness. Seeing them in such a manner - it made the anger in Snow to burn more rapidly. The Queen was heartless. Most of her half-siblings went missing mysteriously, causing the numbers of heir to the throne to decrease in a great number. One mistake and Snow will join them - she knew it well all along.
Your King lies in him and your future is his. Let your dreams fly free at his commands. For he shall lead you to Heaven's Seventh gate ...
Snow snapped out of her thoughts as the poetic line came into her mind. She felt uneasy at the repeat of the sentence.
Someone is after the throne...who is it? , she thought.
Harry watched from the window above the gardens. His silence would made anyone uncomfortable and even more so when they see his stern facial expression. He was not one to come across as the grim butler. Still, he had to keep up appearances. Harry headed to his master's room to prepare a dinner suit. Shu emerge from a steaming bath with sigh of content. No words were exchanged between the Master and servant. Harry left politely.
The head butler approached the Princess and smiled kindly.
"We need to ask our uninvited guests to leave now," he indicated the children,
Two maids bowed politely behind him, each carrying a basket of fruits to tempt the kids away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Your honor, a letter has arrived."

The sturdy teak chair was occupied by a contrasting fragile old man clad in white robes of Justice. He got up slowly to receive his letter from his stone-faced secretary. The old man was not one of niceties and formalities. He rather be left alone in his study than attend some high profile balls. He limped back to his seat. Arthritis was a sign of old age but his eyes remained as sharp as a hawk. He reached for a letter opener slowly and read its contents. His brows furrowed until a tight V was formed. Evening was supposed to be a peaceful time but he sensed trouble. The old judge was impartial but this time, the accused was the Royal household. He dropped the letter on the floor and stared blankly at the ceiling. It is going to be a long night.
