The oldest anime that could be considered to be a harem that I found was Ranma 1/2 (1989).

Is there something older, or did this set the trend?

Here's what I found from running a search on Google:

- Manga the Complete Guide calls Urusei Yatsura (1978) the granddaddy of harem (maid) manga. (Source)

- City Hunter (1987) had a "girl of the week" theme that was considered a forerunner to the harem meme. (Source)

- Tenchi Muyo (1992) is considered to have had the first "harem ending".

It seems most would agree with you that Ranma 1/2 (1989) is the oldest "harem" type anime. That's all I've found so far. Still searching.

Correct, the genre starts at Urusei Yatsura, then hits its stride at Tenchi Muyo (IMO).

Dammit, they got the (imo) right answer by reply 1.

Urusei Yatsura established a lot of the ideas, although his harem was really only 2 (and a bunch of girls outside his reach that hated him).

For really solidifying the theme, gonna go with everyone else ans focus on Tenchi. Lum and Ranma don't *feel* like Harems even though they have some of the themes.

Yeah, it seems Tenchi established the format the most of the other harem animes nowadays take their cues from. Ranma never was a wimpy character or someone who didn't have clue that 1/2 the school was crushing on him.

I remember hearing that UY is what started it all when it comes to the harem genre, but it was Ranma 1/2 (and speaking of Ranma, I am getting the BD re-release of this show later this month) that really set things forward, for better or worse. Tenchi Muyo is the first prototypical harem that is common in anime today. Pretty much, those are the shows that I think back to as far as the roots of a harem go.
