When you can tell someone DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid despite never being taught that at school.

When you spend 3 hours straight trying to get something to work on your PC without a break.

And, like someone else said, when you'd rather play games than go out with your friends. Even talking with them for that matter. It really frustrates me when I get a Skype call in the middle of watching or playing something because it's like 'great, now I either watch it with no volume or flat out stop watching'. While I get you could argue it's more antisocial, I think the fact I'd rather be playing games or watching anime instead of that justifies it as nerdy.

But then there's nothing wrong with nerds and geeks. If people like them didn't exist, then the 'cool' people wouldn't have their expensive, fancy phones and such.

When you have an in-depth discussion with your science teacher about the possibilities of creating an all female race that you could then turn into males at birth with a simple injection.

Ah right, then for me it's music, a lot of my friends play songs and in like 3 seconds I know what it is. Or for games when they talk about games I just go and spout out lots of lines about development and ost.

My immediate thought when reading the original post was my initial confusion of aegis as essentially the same as Aigis from Persona 3 when reading Greek texts for a class on mythology. (Surprisingly, there was someone else who made the same misreading.) However, I suppose I took it just the slightest bit further seeing as my thesis for that class, a 15 page paper, was on Persona 3's usage and revisions of the Orpheus/Eurydice myth from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Oh, and I'm about to start another 15 page thesis on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya on the basis of queer theory (the deployment of non-normative concepts following heteronormative introductions). In short, I know I'm a nerd/geek because I've spent the majority of my graduate career reaffirming that belief with academic evidence.

Yeah that happens to me at work when someone talks about games. They say "I'm a nerd"!. that always makes my ears listen intently. They continue "I have been on Call of duty for 5 hrs straight. My thumbs are numb".

(I've played 19 hrs straight on many JRPG and many of you have played RPGs longer I'm sure, so this guys statement turned me off and made me laugh)

I asked if they played FF XIII or if they will play the new X 2 HD when it comes out. Then they say "You really are a weird guy, those games are for people with no life".

Similarly, I heard a couple people in my history class say they liked anime. I asked them what their favorites were and they corrected their statement to "oh, well, I only really watch Naruto..." I decided to push my luck and asked if they had even heard of Attack on Titan or Sword Art Online (popular, albeit not as mainstream anime that I thought they might know a bit about) and they just gave me blank stares. They don't try to talk to me anymore.

Whenever I try to talk to most people irl about anime, they only know Naruto or DBZ or Evangelion. I try to bring up something like Magi or even Hunter x Hunter and they look at me as if I am an alien. Or we'll find a common show, then I'll talk about that show's anime studio, or the director, or a particular voice actor, and again I get the alien stares.

Sometimes I feel like I'm way too into this hobby.

hmm which part of me is geeky/nerdy
the part that owns a big stack of (mostly marvel) comics from the early 90's?
the book shelves full of sci-fi, fantasy, and manga?
the computer I built myself?
the giant stack of material waiting to get turned into cosplay?
Or - yeah I guess I could go on forever.

Huh. During 7th period history our teacher showed us a black and white photo of tenants (closely packed apartments). I exclaimed in a giddy hushed whisper to the stranger sitting next to me how much it looks like the original Super Smash`s stage. The one that belonged to Ness and had the whole cars and cats.

Yeah, I was talking to a guy about One Piece, then I suggested Attack on Titan and he said he didn't have enough time to watch more than one show...
He was also amazed when I watched 5 episodes in one night.
