How do you feel about mascot characters in anime? In general, do you like them or do you wish they would disappear? When I mean Mascots, I'm talking about talking animals, fairies, robots and other such creatures in a mostly human cast.

Personally, I could do without them. Many times, I find them to be annoying and just shoved in for forced attempts at comic relief. Sometimes, it just makes no sense for their to be a talking animal within an anime. The world can be a slice-of-life anime, completely normal, no supernatural angles at all, but then, there is a talking animal. How does that even make sense? For example: Servant X Service. No sense for the boss to be a remote controlled rabbit. Or Brother's Conflict (Which I've just started), how does the annoying talking squirrel only the girl can understand make any sense at all?

Not all mascots are horrible, I do like some like Dera Mochiyuki from Tamako Market, Maki from Seto No Hayanome, Happy from Fairy Tail (Though, I'm not sure he can be considered a mascot, anymore, considering there's a whole race of them with two additional Exceeds as a part of the cast.), but some mascots are okay. Mostly, though, I could do without them.

I'll hate any mascot that behaves like this creature.

I am against pointless mascots, but if they make a well thought out character into a mascot I don't mind. In Servant X Service, there was sense in the boss being a remote controlled Rabbit, it establishes his character as a total weirdo. I actually found him to be pretty funny. Maki in Seto No Hanayome wasn't totally a mascot, I mean she could have worked just as well if she was normal sized.

The mascots I hate are like Kon from Bleach, or any animal character from the tales of... games minus Rapede from Vesperia. Those characters that basically exist just to be cute and for no other reason. I also don't like Pikachu from Pokemon because well Pikachu's whole existence is merchandising, that is pretty much the only reason that pokemon exists. On the other hand, Meowth is a good character, I like him.

Excalibur is awesome and hilarious. I love him. He isn't cute either, he is obnoxious as hell. Also he is technically the strongest weapon, so he isn't useless either.

I actually liked Excalibur at first, but I think they over exposed him towards the end of the series. He was good in doses, but too much of him was just irritating. Which I think was the whole point.

I can't agree with the Section Chief being a rabbit making sense. Because there would be no office in the world that would allow a man to work for them via remote controlled rabbit because he was shy. It was the only senseless thing in an otherwise sensible comedy. Much like how you feel about Maki would've worked as a normal size (and she would have), I feel about the Chief. He would've worked as a normal man in the office. Being a rabbit detracted from the character. (Plus, he got too much screen time, which I felt should've gone to Hasebe.)

Yeah mascot characters like Excalibur are great, he brings a lot to the table in terms of entertainment.
I also like Ko from R+V, the frog from Wizard Barristers, and the robot from Space Dandy so i can say i like a good number of them.

There is one off the top of my head that i despise and that's Iyorogi-san (the bossy teddy bear from Kobato.) He was so mean to Kobato for the simplest reasons and his voice was so gruff that i wanted to rip his head off. Man...a lot of the characters in that show pissed me off lol

Iyoryogi-san was basically just Kurogane from Tsubasa Chronicle in stuffed animal form.

It's like moe. It's a great addition to a show, but you really have to handle it well. It's like flaked chocolate on a cake, not even comparable to the importance of the strawberry or the whipped cream.

I do like mascots very much though. *-* Whenever I purchase character goods, 90% of the time, it'll be mascots. It's a very good way of providing a symbol for an anime without being completely obvious. I like Nyanko-sensei, I like Hoozuki no Reitetsu's handling of Shiro. I liked Mokona quite a lot. Sadaharu works very well, but didn't really make it for lack of exposure, which was probably for best. I probably would have been a fan of Nana Genie if he was actually more of a mascot and less like a housekeeper and fanservice device.

For the most part, I think anime, at least recent anime, handles mascots well. A handful are really obnoxious with them, but in the others, mascots are major characters that are relevant to the storyline, or if they are less relevant, the show realizes that and keeps them as side characters, not trying to push their appeal beyond the mascot's capabilities.

Yea, they especially pointed that out with the Tsubasa Chronicle cameo haha. So much cameos in Kobato man. Watanuki from xxxHolic, Chii and Frenda from Chobits, jeez.

Excalibur is the greatest gift to man-kind ever conceived. His glorious visage illuminates the darkness for all. Did you know his legend started in the 12th Century? ~EXCALIBUR! EXCALIBUR!~
