I am a man on a mission, my mission is to get you all to watch Kare Kano. Kare Kano in my opinion is the greatest romance anime/manga of all time. I know some of you think that Toradora or Clannad is, please. Unless you have seen this show, you know not of what you speak.

So what is Kare Kano?
"Yukino Miyazawa is the perfect model student. She's pretty, kind, good at sports, and is always at the top of her class; but she's not all that she seems. It's all an act of deception; she is really the self-confessed 'queen of vanity,' and her only goal in life is winning the praise and admiration of everyone around her.

When she enters high school, she finally meets her match: Soichiro Arima, a handsome, athletic, popular, and very intelligent young boy. Ever since he stole the top seat in the class from her, Yukino has hated him, and has been plotting on how to take back her former place as the object of all other students' admiration.

What she wasn't expecting, however, was that Soichiro, the very boy she hated, would confess his love for her; or that he would find out about her deception - and use it to blackmail her!

Together, they discover that they have more in common than they knew, and they slowly begin to bring out each other's inner selves."

Here are the categories it falls under

The animation style is old, yet fluid, mixed in with still images from the manga. The sound quality is good and has a good bud, not that you all would watch the dub... As for the music, its what really makes the anime, aside from the story of course. Why don't you see for youself:

Lets meet the cast, specifically the two main characters.

Now unfortunately the anime does not cover all of the manga, meaning you would have to read the manga to finish the story which turns some of you off. Worry not, its totally worth it. I am here to make it real easy on you:

This shows us where the anime ends so we can start where it left off.

All that is left after you watch this awesome romance anime is to find a place to read Kara Kano. Ahem.
[no modhammer but a teeny tiny scalpel to cut out the offending link --lorreen]
Mod took the link down to the manga, but I'm sure yall can find it.

Now I won't give a link to the anime, I'm sure you all have your ways of finding it. So whats stopping you from watching Kare Kano? Any more questions needing to be answered? I wouldn't mind answering cause I really want all of you who haven't seen it to watch it. For those who have? High five!

As a man whose watched Clannad, Toradora and His and Her Circumstances for me personally, i don't think this even comes close to Toradora or Clannad on my list. Don't get me wrong. This show was good but to me it wasn't even close to the other 2's level. I just never felt it went where those shows did and deserve what i think those shows do. The second half of this particular anime in my opinion was just not as good as the first half. The story started to drift a little on random side characters that i just didn't care for at all near the end of the series. The anime was just not well rounded enough for me to put it that high up on my Romcom or just Rom Anime in general. And that im sure is, because theirs no season 2 so the animes ending just never sat well with me. I don't like to hold it against animes when they don't go as far as books cause sometimes second seasons just don't happen but with this story its a pretty big difference and I was left feeling a little unfulfilled with it. And locking the anime and manga together for this series is giving it the easy way out. Clannad albiet a VN did what the anime did and Toradora went as far as the LN's went so on that alone i'd give those series over all a better rating then this series in particular.

i just don't like to recommend people to watch the anime cause when i do they all feel as if it wasn't enough. Which again when watching is how i felt. i like to just lead people to the original source material instead of Anime. The manga to me was good i loved that story but it just never got anywhere near to where the manga did and for that reason i just don't care for it as much if we're gonna be locking original source material and anime together that is. I know i sound like most people that like to say that the Manga stories are better then the actual Anime and thats not always the case so i don't personally agree with that theory all the time but with this particular story i do believe that the Manga is just a much better and overall more satisfying way of seeing this series play out. When original source materials and animes are good enough to where you could do one with out the other if need be is when i consider as series great. Where if you wanted to you really didn't have to do both. When each can stand alone on their own merit.

Now again even with loving the manga i still don't personally put this series higher then Toradora or Clannad. Although this is a good story and people should read it if they're Rom fans either way.

At least the first episode is available for legal streaming (if you don't mind the dub):

That is from Nozomi Entertainment's official YouTube channel. They may put the other episodes into rotation at some point, but for the moment, that is all there is.

I wached Kare Kano about 15 years ago. I don't remember too much of it apart from it being a typical Anno type production. I think if i really enjoyed the series i would remember it better.

Eh... no.

I did watch and read this series a while back, I think when you had this pop up in the Manga section of the forums. I still put both Clannad and Toradora higher than this show. This show is a good romance I will give it that. I just did not find it better than the others.

Also prepare for a possible modhammer being slammed into you for listing an illegal hosting site.

To each their own, I for one love Kare Kano. The way it approaches its problems is really realistic, and its lighthearted without being too silly. *Cough* Toradora *Cough* Clannad.

I've read some of this. It went down the blackmail route which happens all the time and I don't understand why these supposedly intelligent girls are so easily blackmailed.

That doesn't last long at all, and Arima was doing it just to get Yukino's attention.

Kare Kano - the anime was funny, manga got overly, stupidly dramatic - like a million Shoujos!

Toradora and CLANNAD are jokes to me. Toradora went from being this funny school-romance to this outrageously, overly dramatic tale and makes simple things escalate for the sake of drama. As for the latter CLANNAD....It drags on an on (especially in the first season with Fuko who has no personality other than her "moeness"), and speaking of that, all the characters are moeblobs whose main personality trait was how "kawaii" they are. If not, they're flat characters with one dimensional personalities like "subservient waifu" or something. Second season was better, but to me, all those "touching" moments were ruined by how moe everything was. Again, both seasons of CLANNAD were over dramatic to the point it was downright silly and laughable.

In my personal opinion, Maison Ikkoku is the greatest romance manga of all time.

Come on...In a recent poll for favorite romance, this manga and its characters still topped the list. And it was made in the 80's! And it beat out all the newer anime/manga even though it was the oldest of the bunch. What else can I say?

Not to mention, its one of the most realistic manga of all time, and not only focuses on romance and (outrageous) comedy, but also the struggles of college, how to get a start on your feet in the real world, how to build of confidence in yourself, how to really transition from a young person into an adult. It was humorous, honest, and very touching without ever being cheesy. All the characters developed and had well rounded personalities - no one was a moeblob!

And what makes it unique, is that the romance focuses on a kind hearted but struggling college student...In love with his apartment manager who is not only older than him, but also a recent widow. One of the things that is really touching and done well about this series is also how the widow learns to move on and let go through the years the story takes place in, and learns that you can fall in love and be happy again.

You know, I love NANA (the manga, never watched the anime) but for me...I would not put it in romance mangas though there is romance. For me, NANA was much more a slice of life focusing on the struggles and problems of life, and the friendship between two girls. If anything is an excellent romance manga, its the other manga by the author of NANA - Paradise Kiss. Now that is a realistic and raw manga about first love and all its problems. I actually love it even more than NANA.

You know, NANA reminds me of my other favorite, Fruits Basket in the sense that while both have romance - they really, truly focus more on friendships, personal struggles, healing, moving on...I wouldn't consider either to be real "romance" series.

I kinda liked Kare Kano because (though I acknowledged it not) the whole false front thing the female character had going on for her, spoke to me deeply.

It was a fun anime. and an enjoyable AMV that advertised it to me.

But...

greatest anime of it's type? no.. .sorry.

the fact that I still remember it some 15 years later suggests that it may be worth watching though.
