I don't want Crunchyroll to become a next Facebook. I want Crunchyroll to keep doing what it's doing, and that's streaming my anime. I don't see any problems with CR. The website is freaking easy to use. Let's not start a Windows 8 complain campaign again please.

Also, who cares about dead accounts. Do they bother you? Do they prohibit you from watching your anime? No. If you care about which site has the most active people, go to Facebook or some other social media site. Conform elsewhere.

Looking for a group? Type it in the search bar.
Looking for your friend? Type their profile URL in the browsing bar.
It's not rocket science. Don't make it harder than it has to be.

Just sell the emails of the dead accounts and use their account information.. I'm kidding.

Was the community all that? I remember emo accounts all over the place and self absorbed weirdos.

Ah, I remember when my buddies were placed on the bottom of my profile in an annoying order with different size avatars, when anyone could upload their fan made anime music videos, and when we had the crunchyroll christmas banner competition! So many memories. Now it is just.. too professional?

I've only been on CR for two years, so I can't vouch for how the site used to be. However, I'll chime in with a few others in saying that CR is first and foremost a streaming site. Community is secondary. Would it be nice if there were a few more community features? Sure. But CR is still growing its streaming service. Its focus is elsewhere at the moment. Maybe down the road we'll see some enhanced community features, after they've successfully become the Netflix of anime (and Asian dramas, and manga, and whatever other content they add in the future).

Also, I find the site pretty easy to navigate. Anime is easy to find, the forum layout is straightforward, profiles are pretty standard. One thing I've never liked about CR is the groups, though. Trying to find a group is kind of a nightmare, and they never stay active. This is a community feature, though, and as I said, CR isn't focused on community features like that at the moment.

Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the way things are. The main features I want CR to work on are all content-related and have nothing to do with the community or how the site is set up. I don't care about those things as much.

Well, dumbing down things too much is a bad thing; but I agree. The interface isn't the best. One thing I wish we could do is make the guestbook private, as in make it so that only people you have added as friends can see it.
That being said, I have seen worse....much worse

Hmmm... I joined back in 2008 and even ignored my account for about 4-5 years until I became active again last year; however, aside from the jarring surprise of CR have had ditched Crunchyland and a few miscellaneous details, I haven't noticed much of a difference. I still find CR comfortable to work with. Also, FB has tons of inactive accounts. There are quite a number of people on my Friend list who don't use FB anymore. My stepdad's former account was even deleted, due to inactivity. Apparently, a significant number of FB accounts are ALT, as is proven by FB recently cracking down on it. Plus, over two years ago, my younger sister asked FB to delete an old account of hers (she made a new one), and yet the thing is still sitting there. If FB apparently can't be bothered with a simple thing as that, there's no telling how many other dead accounts are rotting because of FB not getting rid of them when asked.

Well, part of the community decay is the fact the site went legit. A good number of users were purged and turned away from crunchyroll.

To add to the decay, the rules have become stricter, features that perpetuates activity have been phased out, some mods decided to micromanage some aspects of the forums for the sake of the rules and tidyness, and a move to a more "family friendly" community have been implemented. This have turned off a bunch of people in the community. Groups and threads that were a power house back in the day are now basically dead.

For the most part, as I've observed, the changes made were not to nurture the community and actually hurting some aspects of facetime social marketing on crunchyroll.

You took the words out my mouth.

Baka-God. Well, that's a name I haven't heard in a while. I hope that you're doing well.

On their "about us" page, Crunchyroll identifies themselves as "the leading global video service for Japanese anime and Asian media." They don't mention anything about the community. They want to be the Netflix of anime

Their focus as a business is clearly on increasing content as more content = more profit.

What crunchyroll should do is innovate and try to create a social media website that includes streaming. (Combine Facebook, twitter, etc. with Netflix)

The improvement of the "Store" kind of says "We want to be the De Facto place for Anime." Being that place to be that one-stop shop for everything Anime, it's kind of hard to deny that improving the user experience and perpetuating the community would be more profitable for crunchyroll; that was how crunchyroll floated in the past. Imagine the one-two punch of chan-/a/ and Anime reddit with a hint of FB integrated here on crunchyroll. Maximizing the community after they squeeze out what they can in the niche market wouldn't be too bad of an idea. The community isn't bad, but it could be much better especially since the past says that it could be insanely active.

Yes. I totally agree on your last sentence.

The forums are a real mess of pointless off topic boredom.

What CR needs most is a GOOD messaging system not based on the forums, notifications on what you are watching (with privacy options), and ability to "Watch with friends": stream a show into a chat room and talk about it real time with others.

While in theory this idea is a GREAT idea! I would totally love to have a real-time chat. It would provide a much greater sense of community and unity than what's in use now.
BUT
In practice, it would eat up a lot of bandwidth and slow down the streaming service.
Crunchyroll strives to provide a high-quality streaming service.
Thus, the web-design is catered towards optimizing that service.

I, personally, love the website design.
I come here for the news and the anime.

The forums are a place I go to when I'm bored.
While I agree that the forum layout is a bit archaic... with a bit of surfing you can easily stay in touch.

Yeah sorry, for whatever reason i didnt put this forum under feedback. For all of those saying this is first and formost a streaming site, now it is, it wasnt always that way. The community aspect of this site used to matter WAY more, and thats what im saying, i wish they would make certain aspects of interacting with people easier. I dont think it should become the next facebook or twitter, in fact it could never do so mainly because anime/dramas/manga isnt something thats going to draw in nearly as many users as a site like facebook. All im saying is, CR over the past few years has been caring less and less about its community. You can have a good community as well as good streaming, its possible and wouldnt be too hard to accomplish, they are close enough already that some tweaks here and there would fix all of my personal problems. Of course thats the reason why i made this forum topic, because i know that im not the only one who thinks about the state of the site and am curious for other peoples views on the issue. I am happy that so many people have said things about it, because that was my goal to get a discussion going.

i am no more nor less active than since I have joined.

I miss a few catalogue titles that brought me to this site in the first place. but over all I've been very happy with CR since 2008. I'm not sure what this other Crunchroll is? Aside from a few Catalogue titles from the streaming days nothing has changed for me.

Then again maybe there is stuff I never used: CR has always been 'Anime Netflix with a forum" for me

The one thing I WOULD like to see is a better search engine. I don't know how this one works but it sucks.

I do agree that CR is not very engaging socially. However, I don't really need it for social activity, because I have social media networks to do that on. I use it simply to watch anime and drama--which is the purpose, right? I don't mind the forums, but I usually only visit them when I'm bored.

....Really? You want to close your account because the site isn't focused on socialization? Their job is to give us reliable and legal anime streaming, which they are amazing at.

I have Facebook, Youtube, Twitch and other forums for interacting with communities online. But this is the only place that I have for watching legit anime on a consistent basis.
