Seriously, what is with all the grunts and heavy breathing in anime? Instead of just saying "what", "huh", or just be silent like a regular person, they make these noises. Why is that?

People make grunts and heavy breathes in real life too.

Heh. Yeah, that's true.

To really answer the OP's question I'd have to (well more like I want to) get into concepts of voice acting and all that jazz, but don't feel like explaining. Someone else will come along, though (and perhaps explain it better than I could).

On a side note, I've thought about being a voice actor, but I dunno. I'm more of a writer myself. Plus I have a speech impairment problem, but that doesn't necessarily mean I can't succeed at something that requires vocal skills. I mean, just look at what Scatman John did in his lifetime. I have respect for him for his accomplishments. Though, it's like I said. I'd be the person to write the scripts than act them out.

I grunt as an answer to a lot of things, or just give an "mmhmm" noise, which isn't really a word.

Pretty normal stuff.

To get you in trouble and make people in your house think you are watching hentai when you are not.

Meaning an elaborate plot to get you to buy headphones, most likely from Sony.

I am more concerned about the laughing. Anime characters seem to laugh even when something is not funny.

Mmhmm same here Actually today I realized I used the Anime version (not sure how to type it I just know it's one... syllable?) and yet it was still completely understood. And I'm not sure "huh" constitutes an actual word OP. I'd call it "English prefered grunting" no different from the "Eh?!?" you hear so much in Anime.

Oh yeah, that "nn" or whatever noise they make in Japanese. I've used that before, albeit unintentionally. It sounds very similar to "mmhmm".

Coincidentally, I also say "eh" a lot.

I'm pretty sure most languages have these weird grunting nuances.

^This I can't count the number of times my brothers or friends thought I was watching porn while I was watching a fight scene in an anime. Headphones really help when you have family over.

It's just a voice acting thing. I find it funniest in subs when a character goes 'nn' or 'mm' as a way of recognition or confirming something, and then the subs say something like 'Of course you can' as the translation for that one noise.

Then again, it's the same thing with laughs. I've yet to hear anyone seriously laugh like 'kekeke' or 'fufufu'.
