So first I was going to say something based on the title, in that there are a lot of musical based animes out there.... but then I actually read the post...

I might be wrong... but I don't think they are popular in Japan? Musicals that is. I could be completely wrong, I just don't think they are. Not in your Disney/Pixar break out into song sort of way at least.

I'm not sure either, but I'd also be surprised if musicals existed in Japan the way they do here.

It just... doesn't fit to me. But I could be completely wrong.

I know of a Musical JRPG:

When I say Musical btw, I don't mean like it has nice songs, or does flute music or something. There are a crap load of Disney style songs with lyrics placed all over the game.

They make musicals for stage, and some anime have been adapted to musical format (Kuroshitsuji).
I think it's probably 2 main things - actors and marketability. Musicals are probably a lot more expensive and time costly if people break out in song all the time, which requires one or several really good composes, and a lot of good actors who don't just act and sing, but can doth both at the same time. Broadway actors are a different breed from voice actors and film actors.
And 2 - who is going to watch a musical anime? Why bother with that when you can go the idol route, already connected with otaku culture, and cut down on actual songs significantly, or straight up just make a musical and do away without the animation? Your actors are going to be top notch, why hide them with drawings? It's a risky and hard to sell move.

No. Never. We don't have anime series like these because musicals are horrible and they fail miserably to appeal to modern society. If a series ever spontaneously breaks out in crappy songs repeatedly throughout an episode, I will drop it and I will not pick the series back up for any reason.

However, there is diversity in anime. My opinion means nothing in the overall scheme of things, so I am sure there are more than a few series that explode in joyous songs multiple times during an episode. Think of it as fan service, except it is not entertaining in the slightest. Enjoy!

I'm not talking about anime that just simply has music in it (like the characters are in a band or choir), but anime where the characters spontaneously break out into song and dance (like in the Disney movies) Like for example, class is starting and the teacher walks in singing *Stuuuudents, open your books! Focus in leeeearning, not on my looks!* (get it?)

Do you think this is a good idea? It would have least be innovative, right?

Yep, Rhapsody was released in the united states for the ps one, with a remake for the Nintendo DS. There were also sequels to it, as well as a spiritual sequel for the PSP http://youtu.be/k99J5XW0giE called Princess Antiphona. The original game was the first game Nippon Ichi, makers of the Disgaea series, released in the west.

I don't know; I don't have a thing for musicals at all, but I've seen some that I thought were quite good. I don't like West Side Story and Gone With the Wind very much, but Fiddler on the Roof and Les Miserables were great (imo).

And I pretty much grew up on The Sound of Music.

If someone just makes a musical film and says "Here's a famous musical, appreciate it you sheep!" then to hell with them, but if there's passion, and it's a good story and a vehicle for commendable performances, more power to it.

It'd be very strange to see something like that come out of anime, though.

I don't think it's an issue of talent. There are countless Seiyuus who sing OPs/EDs or characters song. Plus a big part of the talent industry in Japan (idols, for example) is based around the individual being skilled in a range of entertainment disciplines such as acting, singing, dancing, etc.

I'd wager that musicals just aren't something that appeals to Japanese people, or at least they aren't popular at the moment.

Because three minutes of the show is taken up by one minute and thirty seconds of the songs used for openings and ending + character songs. Also on the off chance it gets dubbed there is a good chance the voice actors for the English language can't sing well enough and the lyrics could be translated wrong.

Oh my gosh. The idea never crossed my mind, but I think that I would really, really, really love this if it were to happen. There's precedent in the final episode of Kinmoza! Imagine a whole anime like that! I think it would be fantastic! YouTube link for reference. And another

I would prefer it to be in English though, but it would be so difficult to dub something like that. Back in my day, people did manage to dub some good songs though (however, that seems to have gone out of style). And Les Miserables proved that you can still have a great musical even if some of the actors aren't necessarily the best at singing....

Curses! Now I want to see something like this so badly! You've made me crave something I never knew I wanted! T_T
