How come we don't see musical animes?

Because this isn't fucking Disney.

It's time to grow up and forget the childishness of musicals and their unrealistic cheeriness.

There are a lot of music-themed series already out there. Mermaid Melody Pichi-Pichi-Pichi, Love-Live, [email protected], Uta- Prince, Full Moon o Sagashite... Several of those titles use songs to continue the plot as a musical would. Not all musicals involve a lot of dancing, mind you. And not all musicals have people spontaneously break into song. Some are sometimes are about a character pursuing music like music-themed animes.

Now if you're looking for like a LesMis type of musical show (where the entire script is sung), I think it'll cost too much to make it happen. That's a lot of people to hire to continuously create music. That orchestra isn't cheap.

Princess Tutu is now sad.

This is one of the best anime out there and rarely on people's radar because it looks childish. Trust me, it is not.

Go. Find it.

Watch it!

i wonder if song rights may have to do with. I mean one of the reason we never got more of macross was the music right issues, and I heard one of the reason we don't see songs translated in the anime are rights issues, I'd hate if the song drives the plot and we can't get it translated

They did live action musicals of Persona 3, 4, and Arena (I don't think the Danganronpa and Steins;Gate ones were musicals). I guess Japan prefers their musicals live.

There aren't musical tv series of any kind, really. At least I can't think of any. The closest you get is stories involving people who perform, but there is always that framing device. There was the musical episode of Buffy (which is pretty much the greatest thing ever) but that was just one episode. I think it is really expensive to produce them, since the songs forward the narrative and therefore they are not endlessly reusable. I think the cost per episode, especially for short half hour episode shows would become too high to really make it feasible on a week to week basis.

I typically dislike the musical format. Not to say that there aren't musicals I enjoy, but if it's a musical there's a higher chance I'll dislike it. I'd rather there be no such thing as a musical anime, as I think stories are typically told better in just a straight narrative.
