In Japan they supply sanitary wipes to clean your hands. This is often done prior to any meals and they are also a common household item. I suspect this is what OP is referring to.

I am not sure how many would be considered shameful, but 15 does certainly sound excessive.

Man, I remember when Japanese Sushi restaurants I went to would give each person a steaming, rolled-up hand towel before and after the meal. It was the most comfortable hand-wipes I've used. lol

I totally misconstrued what this thread was about...

Anyway, pant legs make for great napkins. Plus! they're machine washable. everyone wins, the trees, you, the poo sap that has to reload the napkin holder thing after you leave, so on.

Actually for most Japanese restaurants here. You start out with one napkin ok but if you ask them for more they give you a tiny stack and if that is not enough they give you another stack.

15 is quite a bit excessive. Even when I am eating a full rack of ribs or any other sort of BBQ here in KS I use only one napkin or paper towel. Given my beard is a master at collecting excess BBQ sauce so I still usually have to use a wet towel to clean that off. Last time I had sushi I think I only used one, maybe two napkins. 15 sounds like maybe an OCD sort of problem, where you have to use a new clean napkin each time you wipe your hands.

I don't feel shamed... should I be? At home I use too much tissues too.

How do you feel about hand sanitizer?

Hand Sanitizer is pure evil!...I'm serious .-. If you want to help in the breeding of a super bug that helps destroy the human race then use hand sanitizer. If not, then just wash your hands like a normal person.

well 15 napkins is a bit much but... well i'd probably use that much if i was eatin wings lol

eh, my biggest beef is using paper plates instead of real ones for every meal, that really kills a lot of trees. and it's expensive too.

what is Ayce

All You Can Eat

Hmm. Thank you for expanding on that acronym Kaldar5. I had never heard it before.

Maybe I value sushi more than most, but all you can eat should be reserved for crappy China buffets, makeshift BBQ joints and tasteless "country style" buffets. Quality food, especially sushi, should never be served in an all you can eat buffet. I wouldn't even consider that crap sushi at that point.

LOL for the most part I agree with what you said about all you can eat food types. However, I had someone take me to a buffet that had 2 Japanese sushi chefs making rolls right there. It was nothing extremely fancy, but it was well made, beautifully done, and tasted like ambrosia. It was also only available two days a week. (I'm guessing those were the only days the chefs were available) The place I'm talking about is probably the ONLY all you can eat buffet place (in this state) where I'd actually eat the sushi. All the others would likely poison me with thawed out 'fake' disks of evil.

on to the napkin thing...
I'm not sure how you used fifteen napkins while eating sushi. did you use your fingers? chopsticks? fork? I'm sure there was a reason for them, but I'm not sure what would cause you to be so messy as to need that many. regardless, I am now craving sushi. lol

Of course its important to wash your hands but there are times when you can't always get to a sink or tissue.
Just saying.

Then deal with it @.@ Being overly paranoid about getting sick when you have a healthy immune system just increases your likely hood of getting sick when you are older and not being able to fight it off (and hand sanitizer also aids in the creation of a super bug)

That shit be expensive, bro

Like maybe if you are at a resturant and use the fuck out of the napkins and toilet paper....K......someone else is paying for it but it is still being paid for, no? Still resources being used.....to point it out to another person at dinner is pretty frucking dickish, though. But if it inspired you to make this post and maybe in the long run use less then maybe it was effective? I still think it's pretty rude to point that out though. : /

A lot of the time the people who are not in charge of the money in the house are REALLY wasteful and completely unable to understand just how much money they throw down the drain through careless actions. I think until it is their responsibility to manage the money there's a lot of people out there that will never understand why the naggy "bitch" in charge of all the money, like it's a privilege and not a burden, complains about seemingly unimportant things.

I guess I shouldn't discredit these all you can eat places so readily. I have eaten at a few different restaurants in past years and was horrified by what they were serving. The sushi was awful. After three failed attempts, I decided to give up and stick to the places I trust to serve me good sushi.

Even if I'm eating wings, I use fewer than that. Maybe 6 at most. I only use 1 when eating at most other places. I tend to conserve as much as possible. It's one of the many habits and personality quirks I picked up from my grandmother. If I am eating a messy food like a big burger or a deep dish pizza, I will use a knife and fork. Actually, I always use utensils in public and I will tidy up the table by putting all the dirty dishes and used napkins in orderly arrangements so servers can clean up easily.

It bugs me a little to see people making out with their food and dripping greasy sauce everywhere and creating childlike messes. I try to look and act refined. It sounds so snobby when I say it, though, haha. I do think people should make an effort to not be so wasteful. It speaks volumes about character and shows the ability to think for others and for the future. After all, future problems arise from present actions.

It is also similar to how I will always wash my used kitchenware by hand immediately after I am done. I clean up drips and spills as soon as possible. I only use my own dishes and utensils. If I go to someone's house to eat a meal, I wash the things I used so the host doesn't have to do it. Much of my kitchenware is very old and expensive. I have antiquated dishes that I cherish and heirloom cookware that's still fully functional after decades of use because I take good care of them. I only have one of everything. My collection is fairly small but every piece is high quality and can't be bought at a random Target or Walmart. I use laminated knifes and fine-grit water stones. I store them away religiously. I have a cast iron that is so seasoned and well-used that the bottom looks like a mirror.

Everybody I've lived with, by contrast, leave their massive piles of dirty dishes in the sink for days and just wait to throw them into a dishwasher that hardly does a better job than my hands since the stains have since hardened into a stubborn crust. Sometimes there is no room for me to wash my dishes and I just wash theirs to get it out of the way. Spills and drips go unnoticed for weeks. Rice turns moldy in the cooker. Their knives are chipped and dull and they store them in great bunches, which cause them to strike together and wear away. They break or leave their cheap dishes dirty and then use mine. I gave them hell when they broke one of my Japanese plates and lost my handmade wrought-iron spatula.

Is there a national napkin shortage that we haven't heard about? ;)

Just go ahead and use however many you want.
