I don't think Log Horizon has been mentioned, but it's great if you like to play MMOs.

The earlier you see Code Geass the better you'll think of it.

Does that mean it's not that good or do you mean that another anime does a similar story better?

That's a complicated question for me. I personally hate Code Geass quite a bit, but I'm also aware that other people have been able to get a much more enjoyable experience out of it than I did--even a great experience. But I also think that the more anime you see, the less special watching Code Geass will be (moreso than usual). So, ideally, if you're going to give it a shot you should do it early, because that's when you'd get the maximum pleasure out of it.

So I'm not saying it's bad, just that I think there's a window of opportunity for some people when it comes to it.

CODE GEASS is my most watched anime i have the entire R1 and R2 dvd collection Limited Edition

1. Shin Sekai Yori - It's there for you when you want your brain to get fried. Honestly though It's a great anime and I love it to bits :)
2. Rurouni Kenshin - A classic anime that is a must watch. Quite a bit of action and emotiooooons.
3. Blast Of Tempest - I would say it's quite a unique anime compared to others and I'd watch it to give yourself a break from the mainstream :)
4. 07 Ghost - Just watch it :>

To aru Majutsu no Index. To aru Kagaku no Railgun. (A certain Magical Index; A Certain Scientific Railgun) That'll definitely get you into anime. :D

Full Metal Panic.

Detective Conan.

and so on...

The first two I mentioned aren't mainstream at all so try them. :D

Index and Railgun aren't well-known in the US. There isn't even an Index manga in the US even though it's the main series!!!

There are a lot of gems out there. It's really just about personal preference. Who is to say what a good anime for beginners to watch? Certainly not me. The first anime I watched was Elfen Lied and i loved it. Brutal violence and heart breaking back story. Gosick was a really good show I wish i would have seen earlier. If you are looking for some recommendations i can give you some but like i said, its hard to say what is a good anime to start if you are just starting.
Some of my favorites
The pet girl of sakurasao
Haganai
The world god only knows
toradora
elfen lied
clannad
clannad after story(obviously)
another
angel beats
b gata h kei
spice and wolf

I will probably get some flak for my choices but hey, i enjoyed them and maybe you will too. Anything for a new viewer

I'm sure people have mentioned some of these:

A Certain Magical Index
Eureka Seven
Bleach
Evangelion Movies
Future Diary
Gurren Lagann
Nura Rise Of The Yokai Clan
Accel World
Blue Exorcist
Magi
Deadman Wonderland

Eureka Seven, Gurren Lagann, and Future Diary I would recommend you watch first. Blue Exorcist and Nura are pretty cool shows too.

Lots of great suggestions here for the genres you are looking for. My friends got me started with a few great shows, so I figured I'd share them with you. Here they are:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Just one show for everyone who watches anime should have on their list.

To Aru Majutsu no Index / To Aru Kagaku no Railgun - There are two seasons for each show. Index is the main Arc, and Railgun is a follow along, or side story. Railgun arcs off and follows a different main character from Index and shows what they were doing when they weren't on screen ( Although sometimes they do intersect ).

**Full Metal Panic - One of my favorite shows, I watched the first season in one sitting when I started to realize that I had an anime problem. This show has three seasons and is great for people who are just starting out because the seasons are well planned to make the show more enjoyable to watch.

Break Blade - This was a good show and they are re-airing it this spring season breaking it from 6 episodes to 12.

**Jormungand - A great action show that will keep you entertained, with a more modern art style and very interesting and unique characters

**Black Lagoon - Another great action show that is a bit older and focuses on a smaller cast. Definitely worth a good watch.

If you're not all that into romance and drama I would probably stay away from Toradora. I'm not saying that it is a bad show but if you're looking to get into romance or drama then Toradora a great choice.

Just wanted to add these because I really enjoy them, although it may be a bit much for someone who is new to anime.
Fairy Tail and Hunter X Hunter do sound right up your alley but just like Gintama and Bleach you need to commit to them because they're quite long. If you're willing to give them the time they're very worth it.

** Full Metal Panic, Black Lagoon, and Jormungand are also available in English if you are still having trouble getting into subtitles.

For noobs, something that won't scare them off :P

Going to be hard since most animes have something that could scare off noobs.
Sword Art Online is very noob friendly, but unfortunatly they'll think it's the best thing created, which it's far from So no to that.

Action:
Hunter x Hunter 2011
Durarara
Eureka Seven
Samurai Champloo
Soul Eater
Suisei no Gargantia

Slice of life (ish):
Space Brothers
Bakuman
Hanasaku Iroha
Higashi no Eden
Minami-ke
Sakamichi no Apollon
Tari Tari

Comedy:
Azumanga Daioh
Chuunibyou
Love Lab

Romance:
Lovely★Complex

Sport:
Over Drive

I took into account that not everyone likes action, which many of you seem to forget

I agree with the rest. If you asked this question last summer I would have told you fairy tail, hunter x hunter and naruto. However, just shy of a year myself I can look back and say I am watching things that I never would have. Don't sale yourself short there are a lot of animes in other categories that just might catch your eye. I have about 12 regular shows that I watch and if you asked me a year ago I would have told you I would never ever watch some of those shows now I can't get enough of it.
