Alright guys, I'm seeing Shin Sekai Yori being strongly recommended next. I'm queueing that up right after Higurashi. I just finished the first episode, and that ending there has already put a good smile on my face.

Tsubasa RC if you start with the series, then switch over to the OVA's. I guess the series animators didn't want to traumatize their audience by following the manga all the way.

Naru Taru Shadow Star.

In the beginning, you think this will be a Show about adorable girls with pokemon like creatures.

Oh how wrong you are.

If anyone wants to check this out, its better to read the manga(the tv series isn't terrible when its subbed). The only real issue with the manga is finding it correctly organized.

Most of Clamp's works have like bitter sweet endings, sort of like, well you have your cake, but now you will never get to eat it muwahahahaha! type of endings. It kind of pisses me off actually.

One with a somewhat dark ending is H2O, Footprints in the sand. It starts with things appearing to be getting better and better, and then takes a huge turn downhill.

Yumekui Merry is one. It starts out pretty cute, and even teases that it might go full ecchi harem (you've got your main male protagonist, his obligatory male friend, and like... one... two... three... at least eight girls, and an occasional fanservice scene or beach episode). Yumeji would've been a decent harem lead too, he's more of an Araragi than a Rito.

But they never go far in that direction, and after a few episodes things get pretty psychologically fucked for a shounen.

Have to totally disagree about Higurashi. It starts off with a brutal bat murder. Sure, it kicks off with cuteness after that, but the show lets you know right off the bat (pun intended) that it will be dark. A similar thing can be said about Madoka Magica.

Kiddy Grade is one that comes to mind. It starts of funny, cute, and full of fan service. And then after episode 3, it really starts to get dark.

I have to agree about Madoka Magica. Even if I hadn't known ahead of time that it got dark, it was obvious from the tone of the show that something wasn't quite right.

It never for a moment felt like it was just going to be a standard mahou shoujo anime.

Really, it starts much earlier than that. People are getting impaled on spikes by like episode 4.

GOSICK sort of fits since it starts somewhat cute, but with mystery shows there always tends to be a darker edge. Still, this show did not go where I first expected. I think it is great when a show can upset your expectations like that.
