Shin Sekai Yori might be up your alley.

I'll confirm that Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is a must watch. Wish I could say the same thing about the Umineko no Naku Koro Ni anime, but its incomplete and doesn't live up to its source material. Not that its completely horrible mind you, but its a shell of what it needs to be for you to even get what you are watching. It might be worth checking out for you though as all of the no Naku Koro Ni works by 07th expansion are intentionally contrasted heavily by the serious and the goofy, which works pretty good imo as it allows you to connect and care about characters a lot more when things go downhill.

The first game\arc was really good.

Higurashi will be confusing at first but if you stick with it you can figure it out.

It starts explaining itself a bit in second season.

Have to totally disagree about Higurashi. It starts off with a brutal bat murder. Sure, it kicks off with cuteness after that, but the show lets you know right off the bat (pun intended) that it will be dark. A similar thing can be said about Madoka Magica.

Kiddy Grade is one that comes to mind. It starts of funny, cute, and full of fan service. And then after episode 3, it really starts to get dark.

I hear ya.

I can overlook that somewhat since I won't be able to find a true surprise either way.

The kicker is, I'm being spoiled from the beginning by any suggestions merely from asking for this sorta genre from you guys.

In the beginning, you think this will be a Show about adorable girls with pokemon like creatures.

Oh how wrong you are.

this is the first one I thought of for this thread. I went from cute to just plain disturbing.

Since everyone already mentioned Higurashi, OP mentioned Madoka & Steins;Gate, and Takes-too-long-to-be-murdered-sexual-assault-protagonist Days was mentioned several times, I'll go with ones that are much lighter in spirit:

Space Runaway Ideon,
Mobile Suit Zeta & Double Zeta Gundam,
Full Moon wo Sagashite,
Mahoromatic.
Oh.. and Robotics;Notes.

All of them change gradually, but it's something different, I suppose. You can't exactly go in expecting something dark.

It's more like you're watching shows with an alternate climax or different approach from the ultra common and highly unrealistic "Everyone is excitedly teaming up to take on adversity during our exciting 'ultra original' climax thankz 2 the Powah of friendshipz"

True, but we aren't really spoiling that much. And I highly recommend Higurashi. It will bend your brain in fun ways by playing with cute, dark, and wtf is going on?

It's hard to talk about Higurashi without spoiling it. For example, just saying that it has more than 5 episodes is a spoiler, because the first 5 episodes are a complete short story on their own. How are you really supposed to describe the show without saying that everyone dies, over and over and over again. It's sort of a series that you just gotta go : "Watch it to the end, take my word for it you won't be dissapointed."

I just describe Higurashi as a horror mystery that's rather graphic at times. Sure it cycles, but that's part of piecing together the originally weird and creepy plot. To begin with, the cycles can be considered alternate perspectives.

Season 2 changes that for the viewer and does is far more effectively than Haruhi season 2.

QFT except you probably said too... much

I remember going back and repeatedly checking the episode numbers trying to figure out if I skpped an episode or something. Wait it's over? oh no there's more but.. how? What... ARGH!

You could describe Higurashi (which i highly recommend) as watching the animation of a visual novel playing out all of the routes, particularly the "bad" endings. It's a very well done anime and does a nice job only telling you things when they want you to know them.

EDIT: adding some info to that. even though decisions are made differently between each route, it gives you a different look at the characters and their motivations and whats going on in their lives and stuff, and each route helps you piece together the whole overarching picture.

Mahoromatic.

Mahoromatic had this weird bi-polar existence. Light and fluffy but the dark was always hinted at in every episode and in the end credits.

and the ending was both an anti-climax and made no sense to me... Still it was an overall fun show.

Shhh... you're spoiling the WTF moments. Let the watcher figure it out.

It's a shame that more people didn't like Umineko, I found that to be a clever anime. I mean what other anime is based completely around ONE debate between two people. It's such a gory anime but it boils down to basically two people sitting in a room discussing how a turn of events really took place.

^This. I hated that ending. Probably the only "logical" ending considering the content, but I still hated it.

That was the only anime that actually affected me emotionally for a good 3 days. It was so unexpected. I knew that they would be sad and or mad, but what happened was completely unexpected...
