Controversial Anime and Manga You Enjoyed
Posted 3/23/14 , edited 3/23/14
In cases you didn't get the memo, choices must be limited to controversial series. Tell why the series is controversial, and why you liked it nonetheless.

I personally enjoyed Koi Kaze. Yes; that Koi Kaze. Brother and sister who lived apart for years fall in love after the sister moves in to the household. Not to mention it also includes a 12 year age difference to spice things up even more. Incest...Or at least, sibling incest is not my thing, yet Koi Kaze appealed to me for the realism and appropriate pain, angst, horror, disgust and confusion. I thought both the anime and manga were well and realistically written, and the anime especially stands out for me for adapting the source material so well. In fact, if this story didn't have any incest in it, I think it would also make a great series about a May-December romance. Not to mention, the overall story is very touching, with no silly smut or fan service whatsoever to mar it.

Bible Black looks like family-friendly programming compared to Night Shift Nurses. Holy shit.

Are any of these controversial?

1. I liked the Eden of the East movies. But I also only saw them once, so if I watched them again maybe I'll figure out what I missed that made everyone and their grandmothers hate them so much. But they were what I expected, honestly.

2. I didn't hate Beyond the Boundary, although it could've been better.

3. As a whole I liked Sword Art Online more than I disliked it.

4. I thought Love, Elections & Chocolate was pretty interesting, particularly for the spy noir subplot.

5. I also really like what I remember of 5 Centimeters Per Second, not just because it looked good. I've heard its story panned a lot recently, but I remember it being an engaging look at missed opportunities and emotional entropy.

/promises self, "I will not debate SAO in this thread. One is enough."

1. Sword Art Online: You all know why this is controversial. To be honest, all the hate it gets probably just pushes me more towards liking it.

2. Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere: It seems to me that I've seen this show panned more than praised, but I absolutely adored it when I watched it and still consider it a really fun show.

3. Free!: Controversial because the guys didn't like all the man-service, but I personally thought the show was fairly engaging and a decent watch. I enjoyed it.

Evangelion, I thought it was great, even tho the imagery and the events in End of Evangelion movie were very controversial.

Maybe I'm dense or just don't pay attention to the douching on this show, but I don't really see SAO as "controversial".

I would've put Kodomo no Jikan around this category, but even then, I'm still pretty dense. "LAWL"

(May there's another "controversial" that folks are talking about here, but then again, I'm still pretty dense. "LAWL")

I happen to read the rest of the Usagi Drop ( /usagi-drop) source (after the time skip) and it didn't really bother me as much as I thought it might. I know some people were quite put off by the second half, but I didn't think it was that offensive.

Most controversial works or subject matter don't offend me as I have an extremely high threshold. I can't think of any subject that I would find offensive on its own. What really bums me out more is shitty writing in non-controversial anime/manga.

There is nothing worse than crap writing ...controversial or not.
