How do you go about converting people to anime?
Posted 3/25/14
Man, I've never even thought about converting someone lol.

I guess it's because I grew up thinking "otaku's are huge weirdos," even though I was and still am one myself. The household in which I resided some years ago deeply resented us geeks.

*shrug* I wouldn't try too hard. If they don't want to get into it, they don't want to get into it. Usually, people who hang around together often enough will get curious about the other's interests and try it out. That's what's usually happened with me. I didn't really do anything but bring anime up a couple times, they got curious and looked into it themselves. I didn't really initiate it.

The one instance I can remember was with my brother. When I was about 15-ish, he was the only one in my family who really knew that I liked anime/manga. Being the younger sibling, he was always curious as to what I was doing, and even though he kept dismissing my interests as kiddy stuff, he eventually got curious enough that when I suggested he watch Code Geass, he didn't hesitate. Now, I don't get him to watch a lot of anime, and he's definitely not an avid fan, but every now and then I'll recommend him something or he'll find something on Hulu and ask me if it's any good.

If you just casually mention anime things every now and then, or let it be known that you like a certain series, then chances are any real friend that respects your interests will be willing to give it a shot.

Now, if you have a friend that expresses mild interest in anime, but you don't want to scare them out of the fandom, have them watch something that is in tune with their existing interests. What genres do they like? My brother loves military stuff and machines, which is why I suggested Code Geass to him. Is it a show that captures attention immediately, or is it slow? If it's slow, it might not be the best introduction anime, because a new viewer could lose interest quickly. I'd say the big action shounens like SAO and Attack on Titan are good starters, because they are captivating, different enough from what a non-otaku would watch yet still easy to follow, and they are short. Don't tell someone new to anime to watch the entirety of One Piece. They most likely will not have the patience for that.

I don't try too hard. I typically wind up recommending Cowboy Bebop first because of its more serious and sometimes subtle adult themes, but they don't watch it anyway.

Show them an Opening song from an anime, and see if they think its cool. Good choices for this being Soul Eater's first opening, Mirai Nikki's first opening, or anything that is actiony accompanied by a good animation.

I remember years ago, when I stumbled upon Bleach, it was that first opening that made me interested in anime, not the premise of the show itself, because i was like "what is this language? why is it so catchy and cool! I want to see moar"

Also, with anime being on the mainstream Netflix (which they more than likely have) just tell them to go check out FMAB or Soul Eater on Netflix.

I just show them some animes that i think they would like. If they did like it, i just show them some more that are similar to that.

Well, that was a great link, thank you. I suppose curious people happening upon your passion for anime would be great, but unfortunately this has never happened for me. Perhaps I'm not closet enough about it...

Good advice, and it's funny how similar your story sounds to mine, right down to Love Hina (2nd anime I watched, had never experienced anime slapstick and ecchi humour before, guess I liked it pretty quickly lol). I think you're right, best not to push, though sometimes I find myself frustrated by people's unwillingness to try anything alongside their willingness to judge and ridicule

Yeah good advice too, thanks. You sound more fortunate than me regarding people's curiosity about it...

Sounds more like my case. I think Cowboy Bebop would make a great starter too, was my third and remains on my top 5, don't think anything will appear that would dethrone it.

Not sure about this - I feel like the hyperactive Japanese-ness of most OP's is the kind of thing that will scare a Westerner away. Plus, a lot of the J-pop tunes are really not accessible. Even for me, I don't often like OP's too much on the first round, but then they grow on me as the show goes along (unfortunately so does their catchiness too).

i dont like converting people at my school into anime because everyone at my school is a retarded conformist poser and wont watch anything unless its popular, if i introduce them to anime the people at school will become more annoying and then i will move to another planet. theres this one guy at school and hes a weaboo and HES SO ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT ANIME AND SAYS JAPANESE WORDS ITS SO FUCKIN ANNOYIN OMG I WANT TO TELL HIM TO SHUT THE FUCK UP but i cannot do that...i am a respectible person...ok

I don't. If they think it's only for children then I'll correct them but I never try and get them into it.

If they show an interest I ask them the kind of regular shows they watch and go from there. If they don't ask, it is a waste of time.
