Yo.

I noticed the suggestions under the Another title were a little lacking...

Has anyone seen this? Crunchyroll doesn't appear to have a horror genre, only a "mature" genre that doesn't suggest anything similar to Another.

Is there a way to locate titles that comprise the horror spectrum of anime?

If you are able suggest similar shows that suit horror junkies like myself, that would be helpful as well.

What are your thoughts on horror anime in general? Do you find it to be less, equally, or even more scary than horror films with real actors?

Well, there's Pupa, but it's generally acknowledged to be pretty terribly executed.

Your best bet for locating other titles would be to either ask at the Recommend Me an Anime Thread, or to use something like MAL or Hummingbird to do a genre search.

I personally am not a fan of horror in any medium, so I can't really give any opinions on live-action versus anime horror.

I haven't watched live-action horror in a long time. The last would've been several movies from the Saw series, but that's not horror; it's more like some kind of cynical dark comedy spliced with gore porn and a helping of cultural satire.

Two horror anime I'd recommend are:

The movie series Kara no Kyoukai:

And the OVA series Hellsing Ultimate:

Pupa freaked me and my friend out.

We just marathoned....I want to say Magi? I think I was showing it to her. But it could have been Kuroko's Basketball.

Anyway we see Pupa. (on xbox app to watch the anime that night on tv)

We went into it thinking it was a 30 minute anime.

Five minutes later we both were sitting there stunned that it ended and pretty did nothing but random stuff that was freaking and made no sense or had real plot. And like...if it was 30 minutes maybe it would have explained.

We regretted ending our night that way. Never touched it since.

It was like a bad trip if you know what I mean.

Unfortunately I spiraled down the vomit hole that is the entire Saw series. The I-laready-saw-the-first-three-so-I-might-as-well-finish-the-series effect took hold.

Thank for the recommendations. I'll give those a shot tonight.

I can't remember ever being scared by an anime but there's a few manga that have freaked me out.
Anyway it's not an anime but I'd recommend any of Junji Ito's manga if you're a fan of horror.

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is quite horrorific. I'd also say Monster, but I am not sure that is what you are looking for.
Where Higurashi would be something closer to like Nightmare on Elmstreet or Friday the XIIIth, Monster would be closer to like Silence of the Lambs.

Great list!

Elfen Lied creator's next adaptation will be starting soon, Gokukoku no Brynhildr (Brynhildr in the Darkness) so hopefully it comes here!

Edit: one more thing, Another had a side story novel last year, "Another Episode S" and there is supposed to be a novel sequel coming out sometime.

Might I ask what amaze balls are? Are they like balls with mazes built inside them? I must admit that would be pretty cool.

Serial experiments lain?

I don't really know. There are a lot of really bloody anime that I don't actually recognize as horror, such as Blood C. Hellsing and Kara no Kyoukai aren't really horror's in my opinion, but I'm going to be that guy and say you should probably watch them anyway.

Horror anime has never really done it for me, and I don't really know too many horrific shows. You might just be better off with crazy suspense thrillers with lots of blood like Death Note, Elfen Lied, or again, serial experiments lain. That's all Another really was for me. A crazy suspense thriller.
