I am extremely disappointed by the news that Oculus (Maker of Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headgear) was sold to Facebook of all companies.
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/facebook-buys-oculus-rift-company-in-a-massive-deal-worth-an-estimated-2-billion/1100-6418540/

The fit is entirely wrong. Facebook is not at its core a hardware engineering organization.

If the company was to be sold, and it should not have been, then it should have at least went to Intel Corporation.

Intel Labs have been working on brain-computer interface using brain wave scanners for years now:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/08/mind-reading-brainscan-so_n_530009.html

Intel also owns Havok, a company that provides physics simulation software to video game studios:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Havok_%28software%29

If Intel could somehow work a brain scan interface into a virtual reality headgear with enhanced physical simulation then the possibilities would be endless.

What a waste. Sure, Oculus is getting plenty of money now but it's not going to see its full potential realized there.

I was going to end up buying one of these eventually, but not any longer. Looks like I'll be giving Sony money for a VR headset now.

Money talks, at the end of the day all everyone cares about is their pocket book. They probably decided to sell it now while they have dibs on the market before Sony totally blows them out of the water since Sony definitely has access to more resources, and for sure other companies are going to jump in to get a piece of the pie. Since oculus needed to be crowd funded I'm sure they wouldn't be able to compete with the bigger companies once they all jumped into the VR train. Honestly I think its a brilliant move on their part, they got a lot of money for their product that would probably become outdated and obsolete compared to products that big companies would probably come out with months/years from now.

Man, people are overreacting way to much on this subject.

2 Billion dollars, I just don't think most of us can really comprehend that offer.

oculus is a cool device, but I really can't see it being destroyed by this transaction. I mean, why would they invest $2B into something that will lose them money in the long run.

The Oculus rift won't change. if anything it will get better.

My 2 cents, Wait till its officially out try it or look up reviews of the finished project,Then make your decision.

For now, just sit back and spectate what could possibly be the best/worst thing that could happen to the Future of VR.

The oculus team is still working on the oculus btw

I agree, and what's the worst thing that can happen? Oculus goes under but VR goes mainstream anyway?

It will more likely be cheaper, better and have more content. All be it with some sort of optional fb tie-in.

Besides, this is great news for VR. It's going mainstream, it's no longer a device for enthusiasts and their friends, it's for everyone.

And that's where you're wrong. I kind of wish that I was that optimistic about Facebook though.

There goes any chance of AAA game development specifically for the Oculus Rift.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

I just don't know. what could they POSSIBLY do.

They just blew 2 Billion dollars on this. This is a lot of money to give to the oculus rift team who are still working on the project even after being bought out.

Facebook could only do so much. IF there is ever any sort of intergration with facebook There would be so much commotion that there will be an On/Off option.

a few years down the line (5-10) I could possibly see facebook allowing VR connection just like they did with webcams.

But, I mean. Really, what could that possibly do to make it worse, Shove the rift dev team more money?

Honestly, I wouldn't mind talking about it.

What would be some MAJOR cons, and some MAJOR pros.

Look at Facebook as a publisher, and the OR team as the developers. Thats how I see it anyways.

Well this sucks.
Out of all things, Facebook had to buy it. They have too much money.

But it'll be interesting to see how this will affect Oculus Rift in the future.

Was downloading an update for CCleaner and read about Oculus Rift and the Avegant's Glyph comparing both. I don't know how Oculus works but Glyph seems like an alternative that uses micro mirrors.

Well I doubt they buy it without any plans on it, so I'll withhold my pessimism until their announcement.

Also remember all that fuss about CR acquisition by Chernin Group and yet nothing really changed.

FaceHugger, you know, that thing you will put on your face and then it will record all of your games, your voice, face recognition and storing that information secretly in their database!

Well.. Bad choice, bad choice indeed. But I wasn't really a fan of that idea anyway -.-
