Depending on weather you allow it as Anime or not RWBY is very good prescisely becuase it uses an anime style without reverting to every single anime trope. (for example none of the girls seem to be blushing maidens or damsels in distress like far too many anime females)

for older ones.

would the Heavy Metal movie count? how about Wizards?

Do shows like the Thundercats reboot count? American made, but like Avatar, animated elsewhere...

American cartoons are either program length commercials for a line of toys, or assume that kids are stupid enough to watch anything as long as it is in cartoon form. Exceptions to this, like Animaniacs, are rare.

It made me wonder though if 'Super Marionation' counts as 'animation' because then we could through Captain Scarlet, Stingray, etc. into the mix...

Look at This. (30 years before Evangelion)

As far as western cartoons I'm going to go with the classic Batman: the Animated Series. Epic soundtrack plus epic voice acting= win all around.

Samurai Jack is the first that comes to mind. Although the main thing that drew me to japanese anime over western cartoons is the episodic/sequential progression of story. As awesome as it was, Samurai Jack had the same amount of story progression as any traditional american cartoon, equal to Dexter's Lab and such.

Adventure, intrigue, wit, stupidity, shenanigans, complex relationships. Archer consistently fails to disappoint me, and consistently succeeds in making me feel great. Also, Jazz Hands...

I'm guessing they mean ≥ (greater than or equal to).

I agree on Avatar and Legend of Korra.

There are probably others but I don't wanna wake up enough to give more answers.
