You're setting yourself up for disappointment, considering the inevitable rush of Attack on Titan votes.

I actually have more trust in the community than that. I thought something similar might happen with Sword Art Online last year, but was pleasantly surprised (of course, it doesn't help that Attack on Titan is a lot better than SAO). I firmly believe at this point that the only people that will vote Attack on Titan as the very best have not seen much else from last year, and those people are typically not too involved in the forums. Kill la Kill is a far bigger worry for me. Of course, we'll have to see.

It's a thread to choose the most popular show of 2013, and express everyone's reasons why.

Last year, Chromie listed out all the shows by each of the four seasons.
In the starting elimination round, each poster chooses (no more than) 8 shows from each season they want to see advance.
At the end of that round, From each season, the 8 with the most votes continue to the tourney proper.
This would have resulted in (ideally) 32 shows, but ties can mess with that a bit.

Each day after that, four shows were (randomly) bracketed, one picked from each season. Each participant ranked the four shows 4-3-2-1 with 4 being the best. You were supposed to use all four numbers and rank all four shows, not repeating any ranks. Each person can only vote once. You also had to give a (short, perhaps pithy) reason why you ranked every show the way you did. If you voted without giving a reason, your vote wasn't supposed to count.

In my opinion, the reasons given were why the thread was interesting. This isn't so much just about which show was the most popular, but why each individual person thought it was. It is more like the year in review, so that people can perhaps see what they missed or overlooked as the shows were airing, and you got to find out more about the forum participants, too. People could also disagree and discuss, but that should be done without rancor. Posts discussing something should really include "NOT A VOTE" at the top to be helpful.

The two shows with the most points in each round after one day continue on. After 9 battles and all shows making an appearance, then the format goes to one-on-one battles with the winners, just like any other tournament bracket, (separate brackets by season for the second phase). Each day, two shows are pitted against each other, and, you pick the one you want to continue and still include a reason.

So, this continues until eventually a winner is chosen. At some point, there was a "revenge" of the fallen sub-tournament to fill in the brackets where otherwise a show would go unopposed due to ties, and such, so even if your show got eliminated early against one of the heavy-hitters, it may still have a chance to rank higher later on.

Hats off to Chrome for running it, I know I wouldn't have the time or energy to do it...

Any idea when our first vote is? Last year's preliminary votes were end of April, but then again, so was the first post. Also, thanks in advance for the hard work, chrome. Looking forward to it.

For all the Kill la Kill acolytes, it was a struggle for me to get to episode seven and I'm still there. Need to finish it to give an honest opinion about it.

Don't fret about that. If you are not into it by episode 7, might have trouble making it to the end and not worth over pressuring yourself about it. Like all things, it is a matter of taste. KilllaKill is all just nonsense with a pretty interesting story is.

Will depend really on what other Crunchyrollers consider a good show makes. I personally consider shows on how much I enjoy it. Nothing more, nothing less. It could be the most detailed, and thought compelling piece ever made, but if the story drags on, becomes obtuse to get the message, then I will go for the simpler, light hearted show that kept me waiting excitedly for the next episode.

My favorite last year was definitely Hataraku Maou-sama!

but others would include Kuroko no Basket 2nd Season, Magi : Kingdom of Magic, Nagi no Asukara, and Monogatari.

Didn't really like Kill la Kill or Attack on Titan

Is it really that unpopular for you to make a statement like that? Magi is amazing! especially The Kingdom of Magic <3

lol No, its just not as popular. At least I don't see many people name it in their top animes this season.

But I concur it's amazing.

Tried watching it. I didn't think anything bad of it, and would probably still vote for it depending on it's battlematch, but wasn't my style so never got into it....Will be interesting to see how the lead shows on the listings will change as the main nomination lists come out.

Also, in regards to bracket match up, as somebody who worked with professional contests, the random match ups typically don't work as well, in say a final 8, is usually,

1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 in terms of their ranking and matchup. Reason is that you want your best in the finals. If you have a say 2v3, when you get down to the semi's you might have eliminated your best in the brackets and quarter finals. Mind you, a vote contest isn't exactly a ratings, spectator sport, but having a random draw can still lead to a silly, and no contest finale...

Looking at what's been shown in 2013 my picks for each season would be:

Oreshura
GJ Club
Problem Children

Oregairu
Yuyushiki
Date A Live
Garganita
Maou-sama

Kiniro Mosaic
Silver Spoon
Fate/kaleid
Monogatari 2
Sunday

White Album 2
Yowamushi Pedal
Kill la Kill
Non Non Biyori
Arpeggio

I'd be fine if any of these make it past the first round
