They close it and start a new one periodically, otherwise it would get too big, as you say...

I'd post every day in this thread about random anime and off topic stuff if it was allowed. I love long threads that have no specific topics. They're better for generating natural conversations than a bunch of threads with separate topics and thoughts.

What about this: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-820049/general-anime-discussions

A couple of months old since last post, I guess you can bump it still and keep it alive.

I think one of the reasons this thread worked so well is that it had a hook that kept people invested in coming back--they wanted to root for their favorite shows, see how they were doing, see what people were saying about them. And once here, there was other conversation happening. At first it was pretty ordinary thread drift that flowed naturally from the candidate-related discussions into other things. Even the first wave of gifs was related to shows being voted on. And as time went on, and folks started interacting more, and getting a little bored once they'd placed their own vote, or were waiting between rounds they ventured into more off-topic chat and disruption which was mostly quite fun.

But then another round would happen, which didn't completely stop the off-topic discussion, but did bring another core topic of discussion for everyone to join in.

I've been disappointed that the Chat with Everybody thread doesn't have more of the kind of fun that this thread had. But there are huge differences between the two. The "chat" thread just kind of throws a bunch of strangers/acquaintances in a big room and commands "talk"--so there's some trivial chit-chat that sometimes goes a couple of rounds and sometimes goes nowhere, and there are long bits of awkward silence. It's low stakes and low reward I guess. This thread created something for people to talk about, and the vote aspect gave them a reason to care--over and over. It gave them a reason to converse, and that got people warmed up, and the momentum built and there was less chance of losing momentum, because even if chat died down a little, it wasn't long before there was another explicit thing to talk about that a large number of participants were interested in.

I think it's the same for the General Anime Discussion. There are so many things you could talk about, but how do you build a core of people who are interested enough in one thing to start with that momentum builds and rapport is created so that multiple successful conversations can branch out or regather and keep going?

THIS. I really like this thread, and it was going good for a while, but just sorta...fizzled.

Exactly! It's also why you get the source material discussions, I Think. It's a place where you know people have something to talk about and are interested in the subject :D

PS: I thumbed your post, does that actually do anything at all?

I've seen a lot of communal/off-topic chitchat in the MOT thread, so there's that at least.

I have also wondered this before.

I suspect that they either do nothing, or do change a value in the backend database, but that there's no activity tied to that.

The "rate as spam" icon, if clicked enough times (by different users probably), does result in an auto report to mods, but if something is really spam we'd rather not wait for some high value of clicks before hearing about it, so most of the time it's better to use the "report to moderator" link. (I've only ever seen one of the auto-generated spam reports, and the post reported was not anything like spam.)

Thumbs up and down though seem to only do anything in comments, and frankly I hate that there's a thumbs down at all and that even a few of those will result in someone's comment getting hidden. That makes me sad.

What do you think? Will it catch up with AMP?

Hmmm... hard to say... AMP has the incentive to keep trekking on continuously, despite the conversations held in there as well, it also has the purpose of sharing the MP's.

IF this thread was re-purposed to keep new battles going, in just this one thread, then maybe. But that would probably turn into a nightmare to keep track of later.

But by itself I think it will just die out in time. How much time can be questionable. Few weeks, heck maybe even a few months, but it will eventually get to the point of dying out.
