"Planet of the apes" is one of those film series that you really just can't screw up. Whether the "Planet of the Apes" in question is the first, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", or the early 2,000s remake of the first movie, each iteration delivers on its premise; the title. It's great because whatever needless angle of approach the producers take, the audience can rest assured that they're getting face value here.

The first flick was about a planet ruled by a three-tiered hierarchy of apes. Awesome! The sequel continues the saga in a much less brilliant fashion; less awesome, but still about apes using their four thumbs to oppose humanity's measly two, only to live on a Rhode Island-sized patch of forest, and all the prequels and remakes to follow provided us with the promised apey goodness for better or mostly worse. It's something you don't really see in other movies, like the butt-shaking explosion fest that is "Transformers", and the too angst ridden to be a Marvel hero "Spiderman".

In "Planet of the Apes", there weren't any budget breaking explosions, butt-shaking, or heroes that you wish would at least grow some aggressive lady parts. Instead, these noble films stuck to trying to make the audience remember them for the struggle between humanity and our furry, freak-footed cousins. It's something I'd like to see more of in modern film; a step down from the who can blow their budget fastest contest so film makers can start risking new ideas.

I love the original movies. I haven't seen any of the reboots.

i'm a big fan of these films. one of the things i like is there are multiple versions of the mythos. including the tv series, cartoon and tons of comics.
