People make fun of anime fans for the same reasons that people always make fun of other people, like intolerance, ignorance, and the attitude that the best way to make yourself feel better is to tear someone else down. They make fun of people because they are insecure assholes. They get away with it because other people excuse their behavior and bullying. It is never acceptable to mock people for liking something that you don't. Unfortunately, anime fans are as guilty of this as anyone else, and I've seen a fair amount of bullying on these forums as well. The best thing to do with an asshole in my opinion is to call them on it. Some people don't realize how offensive they are until someone tells them. Sometimes they are that way because nobody ever tells them.

They think we are too old to watch cartoons.

i don't think it has to do with being too old my Dad is 57 years old and he thinks Blue Exorcist is a Amazing Anime and he enjoyed it.

Maybe you just have an unusually awesome dad?

i'm pretty sure any kind of "fan" of anything is insulted... unless of course it's sports fans. then it's perfectly ok.

Because people are afraid of what they don't understand.

back in the day when you had Goku and Kenshin making anime explode, the stuff was cool. Nowadays try to get someone to like shows that are just kids in high school on top of kids in high school on top of kids in high school

Therefore with anime stereotypes like that you're gonna get some haters

I think it's a lot more complex than that. There were people who insulted anime fans long before every other anime was a high school slice of life.

I Love Anime and Manga and i love to Cosplay and I always have ever since I was Kid, over the years growing up people would treat me like shit and bully me just for being a Fan of Anime, i'm now 27 years old and i got a job and a apartment and i still get treated like shit just for being a Anime Fan people call me Weeaboo, stupid retarded all kinds of names, my next door neighbor calls me a weeaboo when i go to work and it pisses me off so why do people insult Anime Fans? why can't they just respect us and treat Anime Fans with respect? i understand some people don't like Anime but they don't have to insult people and bully people who do like it, i love Anime and i'm very passionate about Anime i just wish these kinds of people would back off and stop.

sorry about some of the language by the way, i just wanted to get this out of my system because this is something that has been bothering me for a long time.

The only real solution is to not let it bother you. On top of that I would suggest flipping them off and telling them "Fuck you, asshole!" Do it with unbridled force. It should get under their skin and maybe teach them a lesson in time.

That is true, when I was in highschool, although this was over 10 years ago, the big anime stuff was all on Toonami. Robotech, Gundam, Outlaw Star, Blue Sub 6, Dragon Ball Z, etc. It was all very explosive and action-like stuff that seemed like it could all be an animated version of Star Wars and Star Trek. Pretty much no one in my highschool made fun of me for being an anime fan and they all thought it was cool that I knew Japanese.

I was overweight then too, and no one bullied me at all. So yeah I have never experienced ridicule for being an anime fan. Or for being fat or for being anything.

To play devil's advocate here: Anime fans can be pretty excruciatingly annoying. So it's not like this gigantic innocent party is the butt of all insults and therefore "woe is us." Take any sort of fandom or hobby too far (like to the point of culturally defining you as a person) and people will be pretty wary of you/it.

I once dated someone who was a self described "gamer girl." She was absolutely obsessed with video games and video game culture. It was all she ever talked or cared about. Thing was: she sucked at video games so I would always kick her ass at anything we played. And I also had a breadth of knowledge about games and gaming that FAR surpassed hers. The difference between us: I'm a normal guy who gets bored and plays a lot of video games, and she wanted to let video games define her.

Apparently after we broke up she dropped video games and got heavily invested in Star Wars and is now an "internet famous" cosplayer as some Twi-lek. That's also funny to me since I remember her knowing nothing about Star Wars, whereas I am intimately familiar with the majority of the extended lore.

The point is that in the context of anime, it's pretty much the same as any fandom- weird people who are too obsessed with it sort of make it less appealing for others. I stayed away from anime for years because of the fans! A couple good series on Netflix and the ease of watching things online is the only thing that got me back into it again for the first time since watching Toonami as a teenager.

Man, back when I was in school in the 90's, anime was looked at as hyper-violent with big-boobed women, so all the high school and college kids thought it was awesome. Obviously it was a lot more than that, but it was the sort of bad social impression that was fine by me.

But a lot of the culture in the anime space has changed in recent years. There are a hell of a lot more shows with high school kids... then there's the whole moe girls thing, and lolis becoming a lot more popular....and I can't put my finger on it, but the guys in anime have gotten a lot more girly, like they're straightening their hair and becoming more fashion-conscious. So it makes anime fans look like hipster teens at best, sexually-frustrated shut-ins at worst. I mean, what are people supposed to think when they see half-naked little girls on hug pillows?

Well my opinion is that if they can't bully you for anime they sure as hell will find something else to piss you off by. They probably don't care that you watch it but since the term "weaboo" can be an insult from watching it they take that opportunity and use it. So they can look cool or whatever.. Of course there are other situations where it's different but I think that's where some of the hate comes from at least.

They might think we're into pedophila, but in the end, those girls are not real, they're just drawings. It would be pretty stupid if someone got arrested for having those kind of pillows. But yeah anime today has changed to the teenage demographic for pleasing.
